Where did my 3Gb go?

Where did my 3Gb go? - 05/03/2001 16:37

Emplode reports that my 40Gig empeg has xxxx out of 37684kb of space used.

Where did my remaining 3Gb go?

I seem to remember bad syncs creating problems like this, I just want to check if this is the case.

I want my HD space back!

I think this is typical. My 18GB model reports 17054 MB. I guess on any drive there's overhead for inodes and directories and whatever else. Or it might be a difference in the way GB are calculated, since everyone has their own method. Technically I think 1 GB should equal exactly 1024 * 1024 * 1024 bytes, but sometimes I've seen programs use 1000 * 1024 * 1024 or even 1000 * 1000 * 1024 for due to sloppy rounding or whatever.

On a somewhat related note, someone told me there is a standards group out there that is trying to rename the words "kilobytes," "megabytes," and "gigabytes" to "kibbybytes," "mibbybites," and "gibbybytes" to avoid 1000 versus 1024 confusion. Silly sounding words if you ask me. Computer terms sound geeky enough without having to ask for a "40 gibbybyte hard drive."

That's typical of any filesystem. If you go out and buy, say a 45GB drive, the drive might be able to actually HOLD 45GB of data, but the filesystem you install on it (be it FAT, NTFS, EXT2) will have a certain amount of overhead. The more space you have on a drive, the more overhead is required. I think on my 60GB drives, only about 54GB or so of it is actual usuable space.

I was afraid of something like that... 3Gb of inodes... bummer...

Greetings!

This is normal and correct. See this thread for Hugo's comments with the 10GB drives...

We format with a low number of inodes (1 per 128kB), so these overheads aren't too large. The main culprit is that the drives are 20GB (is 20,000,000,000 bytes), which works out as 19.073 "real" GB (ie, 2^20).

A 40GB unit is then around 38,146MB without the space being taken for operating software (80MB per drive) and database/inode space on the music partition.
