There is something strange going on with the BBS. The FAQ-entries are dated 21/4/2001 and I don't see new posts in the main index. what is going on?

Perhaps 2 FAQ entries were added and then deleted, or perhaps the date on the machine got messed up somehow. Lots of explanations.

The new posts were on page 5...

I suspect this is the method that the moderators are using to make all of the FAQ entries show up (Now the default display is all posts from the last week)

Tony, care to comment... =)

Exactly - we were struggling with how to make the faq's show up without having to manually select "show all messages" - Paul came up with a system script which changed the dates nightly which seems to work..

It also showed 6 new posts in the FAQ forum. I think it was about midnight that happened, so that should explain it

Re: strange... - 21/04/2001 13:45

yeah - it's a cron-job that runs at midnight..

Another option that we were considering is making the faq invisible (so that it doesn't show up on the index page) but then linking from a button on top to a link that automatically expands everything.. We might do this still if people don't like the current view. (problem is - we're not sure if the software supports this yet..)

So what was wrong with showing all messages in all forums rather than just a week's worth? The FAQ list worked alright then...

True - but this was a software upgrade - an option that would either have to be enabled for all forums, or disabled for all forums.. Also, users have the ability to change their preference - if we were to set to "display all" and a user selects "last 2 weeks," then we'd still have the display problem..

In addition to the reasons Dionysus cited, it also improved the speed of the BBS. Less data to chew on for each user session, less text to send, fewer icons to send, smaller tables to display when listing the topics.

That last one alone was probably worth it to Netscape users. Netscape is awfully slow at drawing big tables. I don't know if 6 got any faster, but 4.7 was terrible.

6 is a disaster; slower than any earlier version. I've gone back to 4.7
(with a bit of bad luck we'll all be under MS monopoly soon)

The newer builds of Mozilla (what the crappy AOL Netscape 6 version is based off) are getting much better. I really dislike AOL for releasing a final product based off version 0.6 of Mozilla. (It's currently at 0.81 with .9 on it's way).

Hopefully Mozilla will turn into something decent one day, as I like many of it's features. But it's just too little too late it seems in the face of Internet Exploder on Microsoft platforms.

May be MS are about to make some really *big* mistakes too. If I read the press correctly, they're about to force an hotmail account on anyone registering their next Windows version. And that after the legal hassle on the integration of IE with W98 of last year. I hope it'll create sufficient uproar to give Netscape another (last?) chance. Another example of their business thinking which makes the warnings posted in this BBS on WMA developments relevant.

I didn't know that NS 6.0 was based on an almost beta Mozilla core. Let's hope they get a decent version out before it's too late . . .
