Re: wiring harness question - 06/06/2001 18:28

now I screwed up
I took the connector off the sled now I am not sure which way it goes on (DUH!)

can someone tell me how to orient the connector I Think I know how it goes but I don't want to end up hooking the 12 volts up to a line out or something

thanks

Here is a pinout of the connector. I'm not sure about the oreintation though, it's been a while since I have seen the Mark 1 connector.

thanks

it looks like I have all the wires I don't know were to connect them in the car

does the 12v hook to the ingnition or constant 12 volts ?

Erm.. Drakino, there are 24pins on a Mk2!

msaeger, they will only fit one way, any good connector will have some sort of locating system on it. The power I/O should be 1 & 13 and be towards the middle of the sled/empeg.

To check, remove any power from the system and plug it in. If it docks easily, it's right. You shouldn't need to force it.

The manual has (at least mine did) a rough description of what the wires are.

I don't think, therefore I am not.

Re: wiring harness question - 06/06/2001 20:13

this is a MK1 so the pin out is correct I guess they added some wires to the MK2

I bought this used so no manual the one on the empeg site is for the MK2

you are correct the plus only goes in one way I didn't even try to put it in (paranoia is bad) it looks like it would go in either way

now if someone know if the 12v goes to ignition or constant I will be ready to put it in
I am guessing ignition otherwise it would never shut off but then when the car gets shut off the power just gets cutoff that sounds bad also

thanks

This shouldn't be a problem. Some people have reported loud pops when the power (ignition) is shut off, but that can be fixed with a bit of electronics (Resistor between sig/gnd on RCA output, ISTR).
I wouldn't recommend tapping it to battery (unswitched) +12v, unless you plan on ALWAYS taking it out of the car when not in use, or you have a few spare car batteries.

12v goes to ignition.

12v goes to ignition.

Well.... I'd say that depends on how you want it to behave...

I have my +12V supply for my MkI wired to constant, not ignition.
I like to be able to use it w/o having to stick the key in, and
I won't leave it alone in the car long enough for battery drainage
to be a factor.

On the other hand I have my other headunit - tape&radio, which I
haven't used for ~3 months - wired as it is 'supposed' to be with
constand and keyed +12V. Will probably remove it now that the receiver
functionality improves on the empeg. I can actually pull in some of the
stations around here w/o any antenna connected, so despite the bad rep.
the tuner of the MkI has, I think it'll work good enough for me...
...until I give in and buy a MkII...

The Mk1 was designed to be wired to the ignition. If you wire it to the constant power, then it's up to you to deal with other issues that will arise (amplifier pops, etc). That's what I had to do when I wired my Mk1 to constant power.

I was just giving a simple answer to a simple question. He asked which it was supposed to be wired to, because he didn't appear to have a preference. So I gave him the simple, quick answer.

Certainly.

I might just be lucky in that my (cheapass, currently looking for
something nicer) amps behave themselves.
