Fantastic!

Could someone please explain the "Ignore as child" setting in the playlist properties? Does this mean that the whole playlist is skipped in when playing the parent? Or that the child playlist is played in listed sequence when played from the parent?

Is this feature operational yet?

Re: 1.03 released!! - 24/06/2001 05:54

Yeah, what is this "Ignore as child" setting? It isn't mentioned in the help either. Maybe that's why they (empeg) haven't announced the official release of 1.03 yet; there are still inconsistencies in the help.
Let's wait for an answer shall we?!?

Re: 1.03 released!! - 24/06/2001 07:52

"Ignore as child" causes the playlist (and its children) not to be included in a recursive play all. For example, I have as my top level playlists: "Artists", "Books", "Compilations", "Soundtracks". If I press down 3 times to play the entire player, I'd prefer that "Books" (i.e. Harry Potter) not be included. By checking "ignore as child", it's not. I have to select it explicitly in order to listen to it.

Yet again, something has been included that I thought would be handy. I have some Goons on my empeg as well as some Eddie Izzard which can sound a bit harsh in the middle of some of my tunes. I'm gonna go and make some changes right now

HELP!!

I've tried to upgrade my Empeg and it keeps stalling. I have already upgraded emplode ot 1.03. When upgragding the player with the car 2 developer image, it keeps stalling at the "Programming flash (kernel)". The first couple of times, no bar was shown at all when it reached the Programming flash stage. This last time (after a reboot and powerdown of the computer and Empeg), I get the bar at about 5% and it is frozen there.

Anyone got any advice? I've followed the upgrade instructions very carefully. BTW, my computer is a P2 350 and is running Win98 SE

Cheers,
Andy

Do you have anything else running that would interfere with the serial port? Any kind of device (Palm Pilot cradle, serial modem, etc.) that would be running off that interrupt or com port? Also, make certain your serial settings are correct. When I did mine, I connected with hyperterminal first, verified that I could get in, disconnected hyperterminal then did the upload.

I hope this helps.

Re: 1.03 released!! - 24/06/2001 23:16

I thought I sent this as a post, but it didn't appear, so I'm going to ask again...

I was wondering if I have to do anything in particular if I'm upgrading from say, 1.01 to 1.03--- I have displayserver and a logo installed. Do you know if i need to uninstall displayserver? Any way to backup my logo? etc. etc.

Thanks,

Eddie

Re: 1.03 released!! - 25/06/2001 00:08

The upgrade will not affect the logo.

You do not need to de-install displayserver before upgrading.

The upgrade will erase displayserver, however, and you may wish to re-install it.

Thanks for the reply. I am pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the serial connection. I have often used Hyperterm to have a look at what is going on (and to install displayserver). It does actually seem to register the Epeg is there (once I power it on) and it does seem to erase the flash memory ok so I think the connection is ok. Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Andy

Try downloading the developer upgrade file again - it might be corrupted.

Re: 1.03 released!! - 25/06/2001 05:15

OK, will do. Actually, the first time I downloaded it, I got a 24MB file which was obviously corrupted. That file was reported as corrupted by the upgrading program though whereas the one I have at the moment appears fine. I will try again. I also downloaded the consumer image and that behaved the same so it is a bit of a long shot.

Andy

Speaking of logos (and I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it), I was wondering if the new software replaced the old empeg logo.

I haven't upgraded the software since I got my player, and I really don't want to loose the empeg logo.

I does not. I upgraded from 1.02 to 1.03 and still have the empeg logo at boot.

Re: 1.03 released!! - 25/06/2001 08:03

All versions of the software since 1.02 contain both the Empeg logo and the Rio logo as the main logo. You choose which one to display via the first four bytes of the custom-logo. This will not change for the foreseeable future, it's a designed-in feature. My logo editor program allows you to choose between the two with the "I have an empeg/I have a rio" menu.

Re: 1.03 released!! - 25/06/2001 13:59

Wahey!! My Empeg is back.

I tried downloading the file again - didn't work.
Started getting very desperate.
Installed Emplode etc on my laptop and tried the upgrade from there - didn't work.
Now getting extremely desperate.
Took the Empeg and software to my friends house. Upgrade worked!!!! No idea why it doesn't like the serial port on my machine at home but at least I'll know for next time.

Many thanks to all gave help and suggested things to try, I appreciate it.

I'm now much keener on Ethernet/USB upgrades than ever!

Cheers,
Andy

Re: 1.03 released!! - 25/06/2001 14:18

you can only do the updates via the serial anyway right ?

Re: 1.03 released!! - 25/06/2001 14:27

Barring some serious messing around with harddisks, laptops or 2.5 convertors and the image file. Yes, the only way you can upgrade is the serial interface. (I am sure the people at empeg have some more possebilities they could conjure up mind you ).

I presume you were wondering wether it could be done also via ethernet or USB.

Re: 1.03 released!! - 26/06/2001 01:34

Yeah, as was mentioned by Hans, you can only (presently) upgrade via the serial port. I believe that we will get Ethernet/USB upgrades at some point.
The problem with USB/Ethernet upgrades is that if they go wrong and you end up with no kernel (like I did), you'd probably have to use the serial port to recover anyway as without a kernel, you won't have Ethernet or USB support.

Andy

Re: 1.03 released!! - 26/06/2001 11:35

There is also the issue of drivers and connectivity, as it is now (and I am sure Altman will pummel me and correct me if I say something wrong now ) the upgrade process is handled in the bootstrap before drivers or anything of the sort are loaded. At this time there are no ethernet or USB drivers (since the kernel is not loaded yet) to provide connectivity. But like you say, you could work around this and leave the serial port-upgrade in there as a last resort recovery option. Considering you don't upgrade every other day the serial-only setup we have right now should suffice. Though the idea of prehaps something like a TFTP option (like often done in say Networking hardware i.e. cisco routers) has it's charm too. Actually, having a tftp client on the empeg (in the developers image) would be nice. To transfer those homemade yet awesome apps like say Franks display server.

Yeah, this would be on my wish list really ... You can get it easily enough I know, but it sounds like a good tool to put on there by default.

Hans

Upgrades via emplode are on the wishlist; in theory, some of the work we've done on other projects recently makes this easier to implement.

Serial is still the fallback, though.
