Re: how will this drive do as my 2nd drive in my mk2 - 09/07/200107:29
The IBM spec sheet seems to suggest that it's fine. The 4200 RPM spin speed should give it quiet operation and the height is within spec for the drive tray. I reckon it should be fine.
Just follow the FAQs of the installation and all should be groovy.
Murray 06000047 I don't think, therefore I am not.

By the way - there is a utility available on the IBM website for changing the operating characteristics of the travelstar drives. You can set the drive to "quiet" operation or "performance" - which is default.
If you have noisy IBM drives, you might want to check that utility out - it's available as a link off the tech specs for the drive above.

I too have a Travelstar second hard drive, which rattles more than the original (Toshiba ?) that came with the empeg. Tried to find the utility you talk about, but can't find it. Any pointers? Thanks

Hrmm... The "Linux" version of this feature tool requires a floppy disk. I looked at my empeg several times but wasn't able to locate a floppy drive. :)
Guess you'd have to take the drive out of your empeg, connect it to a notebook PC to run this utility, and reinstall it in your empeg....

The setting isn't permanent, so it won't survive reboots as I remember. You could write a little program to do the ioctl to send the appropriate ATA command quite easily, but this just quietens the seeks (by slowing them down). I doubt it's worth it for the carplayer!
Re: how will this drive do as my 2nd drive in my mk2 - 10/07/200111:20
Interesting! Now I understand.
Still, I could see how reducing seek noise could be a benefit in the car player. I mean, if you're parked with the engine off, and you're making the moves on your girlfriend, it would be good to keep disk-seek noise from reducing the effectiveness of the Barry White you've got playing.

What do you need a girlfriend for if you have an Empeg ?
If you kinda happen to have the 'likes-to-talk-a-lot-about-anything' type of girlfriend, as I do, you can crank up the volume to a certain level she doesn't even try to reach. The anecdote about birds tweetering themselves to death comes to mind... Hehe, just a stupid answer to a stupid question!!! ;o)

No, you just forgot to mention boyfriend, or better yet change it to 'partner' as this is the most obvious word to choose nowadays, that's always right, right?!?!?.
