Empeg installation in SFO bay area - 31/07/2001 10:27

I live in the SFO bay area, and want to get my Empeg unit installed. Could you please suggest a good place? How was your experience (good/bad/ugly)?

Thanks!

My buddy Scott is the head installer at Circuit City in Dublin, CA. Yeah, i know the initial reaction, chain store...bah. But Scott knows what's up, and he did my Empeg installation on two cars... the first a '93 Civic hatchback and currently a '99 Civic Si. See pictures here. He does really good work, and he's had Empeg experience. If your interested i can put you in touch with him... though i'm pretty sure he'd have to do the install out of Circuit City unless you bought amps or something else from the store.

Loren, your SI looks GREAT. Are you over on the clubsi.com website? How do you have teh empeg adn teh tv hooked up? I am thinking of doing something similar. That is a great install man.

Heh, it looked even cooler in person. He was running Starfighter on the Playstation 2 on that TV screen. I think my favorite part of the install was the joystick connectors for the PS2. Loren, do you have pictures of the joystick connection points?

I agree, very nicely integrated...

Oh yeah, and the aliens hanging from the mirror are a nice touch.

"Nirvana is coming. The mystic portal awaits."

Cracks me up every time.

Thanks! Nah, i'm not in the clubsi.com site. I generally shy away from showing the car off, which you might find hard to believe... heh. It was more of a fun project than for show. Anyhoo... the switchbox in the glovebox outs the audio to the aux in of the empeg, and the video to the screen (or you can just change an rca and have the audio go to the screen as well if you wanna listen to the empeg and game at the same time), so you can switch from PS2 (which isn't in the car most of the time) to the PSOne. Pretty easy set up. Scott loves to do crazy installs, it's scary when his mind gets crankin'... "Let's stick this here, no wait, we could mount the PS2 in the dash, cut out the airbag...etc etc..."

Yeah, that was the craziest thing, the extension cables for the PS fit almost EXACTLY with the ports in the center console... i mean the curves and everything... like it was meant to be or something.

The question is, when i start working there (it'll happen someday) am i going to keep the aliens and be chastized for being a "fanboy"?? heheh.

I love pic25. You can just see the photographer in the screen.

I got mine installed at the Auto Sound and Security (4848 El Camino Real, Sunnyvale). The guy there (Vince) had installed Empegs before, and did a wonderful job.

I am obviously thrilled with my unit.

Got mine installed at Circuit City in San Jose on StevensCreek. Lance did the installation. I ended up paying $60 for the deck install, $60 for the amp install and ~$100 for cables (all they sell is Monster) and parts. Not only did it take them 7 hours, but they did a pretty shoddy job. My mounting plate is scratched badly. The player is not flush with the mounting plate. Wires are hanging, despite the fact that there is plastic wire conduit parrallel to those hanging wires. He claims the blue remote amp wire came loose on my riocar chassis, so he had to wire the amp directly to the accessory circuit. Everything works ok, but if I pull or insert the player while the car is on, there's a horrible feedback pop that can't be good for the player or speakers. Learned not to do that real quick. If the car is running without the player in, there is horribly loud engine feedback noise from the amp.

I should have just done the installation myself, but I was thinking that a "professional" would do it better. I keep forgetting that I live in the Bay Area and no one pays attention to quality or takes pride in their work.

Despite my better judgement, I'll be taking mine back and making them do the whole thing over again correctly.

I can't necessarily fault Circuit City for the failings of one location or set of individuals, but I won't give them any more of my patronage.

Nick, before you do anything else, make sure to contact Tech Support and have them issue you a new connector. The thing with the wires pulling out was a known problem and they'll replace it for you.

I don't recommend returning to Circuit City for any reason. If I were in your shoes, I would call the installation charges "water under the bridge" and either hire a proper installer or do it myself.
