I miss my car stereo...

I miss my car stereo... - 14/08/2001 11:29

...and my mp3 server for listening at work. I just dropped off my empeg at a FedEx shipping center. It's heading back to Cambridge for a drive upgrade. I suppose the good news is I'll have 32GB of space for music instead of 12. The bad news is I have to live without my player for a while :(

I do want to thank the guys at empeg for providing such great service. After reading a couple of the other threads around here, I'm glad to be dealing with the folks in Cambridge then the some other folks in the US. I'm sure the turn around will be much better, regardless of it having to travel so much further in the process.

It's a good thing. Just imagine how pleased you'll be when you get it back with a shiny new hard drive installed.

As much as I've ignored the fact that I have a second head unit w/ CD changer in the trunk since I installed my empeg (I don't know that I've used the CD changer once), I'm very glad to have it at the moment. I rewired (read: moved a set of RCA cables...my wiring knowledge is very limited) my stereo so I don't have to live without music for the next few days.

I only have sound in my front speakers, but that should at least hold me over in the meantime.

nobody really lives without their empeg.

Ain't that the truth, I *survived* with an old boom box in the backseat until I got my empeg functional again after the fall in the parking lot.

Then yesterday I got rear-ended and the first thing I notice, besides being slammed into the woman ahead of me, is that my empeg shot right out of the dash onto the floor... My first thoughts were "Oh s#!t, not again!" It still works but now I need 2 new bumpers and a new trailer hitch.

What are the costs and timescales involved in getting drive upgrade done by empeg? I couldn't find anything on the web site. Ta. Phil.

I'd contact support and ask them the question...that's what I did.

Had to ask: what's with the bowling pin in the trunk (pic #6)?

Ok I'm *really* missing my stereo - 23/08/2001 08:38

My empeg has been stuck in Memphis for two days on it's way back from Cambridge...FedEx tracking site says "Regulatory Agency Clearance Delay" (3 seperate times for that comment from the past couple of days).

Anyone have any idea what that means? Is there some sort of problem clearing customs? I could have driven to Memphis to get it myself and back by now. *sigh*

That usually means that FedEx lost the FCC paperwork that was sent along with your empeg. Contact support or call empeg/Rio.

That doesn't bode well.

I'd like to take this opportunity to express my love for the US Customs Service. I hope they're enjoying my mp3 collection in Memphis

I had support contact them shortly after you posted about the problem. They were waiting for you to get back to them.

Well, after days of being held captive by FedEx and the US Customs Service, my empeg is finally back home with me...and how nice it is. I suppose it could have been worse. The priority overnight delivery ended up being only 3 days.

I do want to thank David Moss and Rob at Rio for hopping right on this to help get my player here.

Re: I miss my car stereo... - 24/08/2001 14:38

If it's any consolation to you, my empeg went to look for yours in Memphis (I assume it found it, and they had a nice long chat, as mine got there on the 22nd), and is now awaiting my filling out a form declaring the repair value for my warranty work.

I have been in contact with Andrew at Rio and he has been very helpful. The guy I've spoken with at FedEx has also been very helpful. However, Customs is apparently insisting they need a value for the repair.

You just gotta love US Customs...

Yes, this is a new thing - in three years we've never been asked to value a repair, until now. It totally escapes me what relevence it has - it's the value of the goods that should interest them.

Were these warranty repairs or were they chargable?

I couldn't figure out the relevance myself. Acutally, in my case..I was having a second HD put into the unit...though I noticed it was marked as a repair under warranty on the paperwork.

Re: I miss my car stereo... - 26/08/2001 16:14

It was a warranty repair (the IR receiver.) I told the guy from FedEx how ridiculous this was over "something like a 39 cent part."

He said "OK, we'll list the repair value at $0.39."

They were, in fact, very interested in the market value of the player, especially since it left here with a declared value in US Dollars, and left the UK with the same value, but listed in Pounds.

All is well, however as it arrived in Fort Lauderdale Yesterday at 9:45 am. Now when I get back from Missouri, we'll see if it suffered any ill at the hands of FedEx, et al.

Re: I miss my car stereo... - 27/08/2001 02:45

That was an error - should have been listed in dollars both ways. The export value is irrelevent anyway - the item is duty free into the US (thanks to code 8471 5030 00). We pay tax for the import which is why we grumble a bit if people ignore our shipping instructions and value it at $2m or something

Re: I miss my car stereo... - 27/08/2001 12:46

Wow! My empeg went back and forth a total of three times, I think, getting it fixed from the big fall. Never held up in customs once. It was the unit itself that gave me and empeg grief. Not working when I send it, works when empeg gets it, dosn't work when I get it back. Finicky unit, but all is well now...
