Empeg with two harddrives: upgrade by myself ? - 06/09/2001 00:54

I have bought a Empeg with a 12 Gbyte hardrive. I also installed a second 12 Gbyte travelstar for a year ago into the empeg, and everything works fine.

Is it possible to change one or two of them with bigger drives, without the transfer to the empeg team ?

I have realy good computer experience (Novell, NT, OS/2, etc), but till today i spent not much time for the linux OS.

I'd guess the process should be just the same as when You added a disk... just that you loose the content of the old disk...

It's really no problem at all. Read the FAQ entry - and follow the steps. Really easy to do.
you can either change the 12 GB disk or add a second disk - both without problems. no special skills in the linux-os needed. upgrade is done in about half an hour...

Say you are replacing the second disk:

- First copy content of your /drive1/fids directory to PC. You will find a number of methods on this board (displayserver seems to be the most popular). I personally prefer ftp (I run only client on empeg and server on PC - I find it easier than the other way around). It does require a bit of Linux/Unix knowledge, but again, the search of the board will unearth useful tips.
- Install the new disk as if the old one was never there.
- Copy content of /drive1/fids back.
- Delete /drive0/var/database, run the player to rebuild it.
- Just in case, make a token change in emplode and sync to rebuild the database again and store it.

Mind you, I have never actually done this, but sounds reasonable...

Of course, if you have all your MP3s on PC, with correct tags and in the structure you like, you might choose to simply delete everything from the player and do one BIIIIIG sync. However, this way you will lose your secondary playlist structure, if you have one.

Good luck!

Let's say drive A and B are in the empeg now and you just bought another drive called C. Isn't there a way to remove drive B, insert drive C (so now A and C are in the empeg) and then copy the contents of A to C while both are connected to the empeg?

Yes, but we were talking about rescuing the contents of drive B (the one that goes out).

Ah, you mean remove B, install C, copy from A to C, remove C, return B, copy from B to A, remove B, install C? Yes, it would work, might even be easier to novice than make ftp working...

Actually, if you are taking both drives and combining to one, I recommend:

) Remove old drives A & B. Install C. Run builder on C. Install A as a slave drive. Copy A -> C. Install B as a slave. Copy B -> C. Remove B. Delete C's database directory. Reboot / sync.

If you are leaving A in place:

) Remove A & B. Run builder on C. Install C as master, B as slave. Copy B -> C. Install A & C. Wipe database directories, rebuild / sync.

Your milage may vary.

This solution sounds realy good. I will easy prepare one or two new drives for the empeg.
After the empty Empeg works fine, i must copy the /fids directory of my old drives to the new drives (FTP, directly, however :-) I could/must delete the database for creating a new index, and that's it.

I looked into the FAQ "How do I upgrade my player's hard disk", and any of my questions are answered allready there (shame). I looked into the FAQ for a will, and i could only remember me to read something about a second drive installation.

Sorry to waste your time, I am not one of this persons who write into a board, and don't read/search older posts before.

oops, i guess I did stop half way through explaining that huh? Coffee hadn't quite set in yet. This is what I was getting at: (but I lack the experience to explain it this well) :P
