Couldn't find anything on this in the archives, but this might be of interest to any potential StrongArm Linux hackers - do we know any such people? :)

http://tuxscreen.net/ is the failed StrongArm-based Philips/Lucent web phone. Totally useless, except for the
fact that you can get Linux running on it. It has a good, big color LCD, PCMCIA, DSP, phone handset, IR remote keyboard...

I'm going to use a couple of these for my home entertainment system, potentially feeding both my empegs and my Rio Receivers, if we ever get streaming and uncompressed WAV support

With the project dead, and without additional hacking beyond installing some software, what is the current functionality when one of these units arrives at your doorstep? ie. within a day or two, what can I use it for?

Looking through the website, but I have to hit the road for work..

One of these showed up in our chill out area (on top of the RTV4000 stack ) the other week. We all crowded round and poked at it a bit (Hugo took it apart of course) and then everyone got bored and went away.

Maybe we'll think of a use for it one day.

I thought Hugo said he wasn't a hardware guy.
Or were you talking figuratively? Typical tech response, I'm glad he's not a doctor. "Hmm. You say you have a cold eh? Well we'll just TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR LUNGS" tearing of flesh, screams of pain. etc.

There, three posts and off topic

RTV4000! I read the info on the site. What's it like?
If it were available here I'd mortgage my dog or brother to get one.

At the moment it's like a thing that doesn't understand PAL, only NTSC.

Patrick says Hugo isn't a hardware guy. Hugo thinks he is. He certainly has lots of flashing blinking boxes made by HP.

Re: Dr Hugo - 30/11/2001 12:21

I'm the most hardware guy in the office, I just don't do PCB layout or schematic capture... I still design stuff, solder down/remove SMT components and fix things... I don't make jet engines or own a lathe though, so it's not *real* hardware :)

Well, with the project officially dead, and without additional hacking beyond installing some software, what is the current functionality of an empeg?

Pretty much nothing. But if you actually put Linux on it (straightforward), you have a quiet, fast-starting user interface box for a home entertainment system or whatever. That might even work as a voice-over-IP phone or intercom.

Re: Tuxscreen - 14/12/2001 14:31

Well, the way I intend to use it is have one in each room, as the user interface, with a Rio Receiver driving the speakers, fetching stuff from my 1-terabyte Cheap IDE RAID Box.
