How many other MP3 devices do you have? - 05/01/2002 16:02

I just got done reconfiguring my computers in my home office network and running the cables to all the things that plug into the computers and realized that I have a bunch of MP3 gadgets in addition to my Rio Car.

I have:

1) Rio Car 60gb
2) Rio PMP 300 (32+32mb installed, Black)
3) Creative Nomad Jukebox (6GB, Blue)
4) Apple iPod

and I'm not sure if it should count the same way:

5) Dedicated MP3 Server with 60gb RAID 1 storage on a UPS running Win2K Server

Ironically, all of these gadgets are connected in a different way: Ethernet for the Rio Car, Parallel Port for the PMP 300, USB for the Nomad Jukebox and Firewire for the iPod

So I was wondering if I.....

A) Have more MP3 gadgets than the average person here
B) Am Typical of the userbase here
C) Am Waaaay behind everyone else on getting my Mp3 goodness

So how many Mp3 devices do you guys have? I wanna see if I need therapy or not...

I don't have *exactly* that many

2 Rio Cars, 10 and a 20 on order

A laptop I use to serve MP3s for parties.

A MP3 CD portable that I use for the same

A Nomad II that hasn't seen use in *ages*. Mostly because I couldn't fit enough songs on the chip I had.

I have the Nomad II MG, which I actually use mostly for FM radio at work. I really love that thing, great purchase. It is hard to use at the gym, so I bought this little thing called an Amphipod, which is an amazing little wallet type thing that clips to your shorts. Really makes it usable.

1) 3x EMPEG/RioCars (also have a 'rental car adapter' so I can use the player for business/personal trips that involve spending too much time in rental cars)
2) Desktop PC acts as MP3 server at home (one drive currently dedicated to MP3s)
3) Casio E-200 PocketPC serves as MP3 player on travel (using large compact flash for now... USB host feature of device may allow using higher capacity external USB drives in the future)

Where can I find mopre information on the Amphipod? Right now I use the PMP 300 at the gym, and I considered buying the Nomad II MG Limited Edition (right before they sold out) for that purpose.

I don't have any "other" devices, 3 Empegs and a couple PCs work for me. Although, I'd like to get an AudioReQuest ARQ2 Pro.

Well, let's see:

1) Rio 500 MP3 player
2) Rio 800 Extreme MP3 player
3) SliMP3 MP3 player
4) Rio Car 10GB
5) Wife's Rio Car 10GB
6) Aiwa CDC-MP3
7) Wife's CDC-MP3
8) iPaq 3650 running familiar Linux and playing MP3s
9) iPaq 3850 running Pocket PC 2002 and playing MP3s
10) Sharp Zaurus SL5000D running Embedix Linux and playing MP3s

...of course, those are just the portable devices. There's also:

11) FreeBSD file server with main RAID 0 MP3 repository, SliMP3 server code, and SAMBA server sharing MP3s to two wireless notebooks and two desktops, which also play MP3s.

We have a few too many gadgets for a 2-person/1 cat household.

I was thinking of making a wireless Rio Receiver. What did you use to accomplish this? I would like to know your experience.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the AudioTron yet. I would have to say this is my favorite of my mp3 devices. Uses ethernet or hpna to access shared mp3s on a lan. It is an audio component that has optical and rca outs. Beats the pants off of having several 400 disc changers. In fact, my cd player has seen little use since I got it about a year ago. More Info

As for portable mp3 players I've had this upgrade path
Rio PMP 300 -> Rave MP2000 -> Nomad II -> Nomad Jukebox 6GB (now 30GB).

Mobile MP3 is the RioCar 10GB (Soon to be upgraded to 40GB).

As a side note, I saw that BestBuy had the Dell/Rio Digital Audio Player on clearance for $150.
