way to record into the riocar while in the car??? - 14/02/2002 11:12

I have a Pioneer p9300 cd player and the riocar. Is there a way to pop a cd into the pioneer, and record it into the harddrive of the riocar, while I'm driving. Pioneer created a $2,000 10gb cd deck recorder, so I was wondering if the rio can do the same thing.

No, your Pioneer doesn't know how to rip CDs and there is no way to sending the ripped data over to the Rio anyway.

This is a FAQ entry.

It sure would be nice if the empeg guys made a car player which had a built-in ripper. Kind of like the Rio HSX-109, except for the car. Yup, sure would be nice...

Hi,

but how would you type in the track tags?

It sure would be nice being able to rip the tracks though... and then home upload them to the computer (if the cd is not available) and fill in what's missing...

Well, the HSX-109 has a copy of the CDDB built in. But yes, for those discs that aren't in the CDDB I agree that typing in the track tags would be a pain without a keyboard. This is the same problem with the Sony and Pioneer units that were shown at CES this year. If I recall correctly, one of them doesn't even have tagging.

Oh, by the way, the HSX has USB connectors that will accept a USB keyboard for tagging... This was all discussed recently over on that BBS, so the issue isn't worth hashing over here.

As Tony indicated, it would probably be done by a USB keyboard. The Mark 3 design Hugo hinted about a while back did have a removable hard drive, so in theory, a home dock would exist that would elliminate the mandatory ripping and tagging in car like the Pioneer and Sony units.

EDIT: Deleted my post and posted it in the HSX-109 forum... (more appropriate)

I was thinking of a theoritical system of doing this. Basically you could disassemble one of those hard drive docking stations for a PC, take out the part that allows you to dock the IDE cable. Then do some custom cable work so the docking piece fits in your car docking station and an IDE cable from the empeg goings to it. Ok so there's your CDROM drive connected to the empeg externally. Now you need to put the whole CDDB database on your hard drive and compile some kind of ripper program on the empeg and find a way to execute from within hijack or something. So it is theoritically possible but probably not for the faint or heart (or the lazy).

You'll also have to figure out a way to power the CDROM +5v +12v.
I think the EMPEG has some places on the mboard for power, search the forum. or was that serial interfaces? hmmm.
