Can't access RioCar.org from school

The riocar.org site has been blocked by N2H2 (bess) filtering system. This prevents most school computers in the US from accessing riocar.org....the stated reason for the site being blocked is that it contains pornography...does anyone know why the filter thinks this???...i miss getting info at school. :-/

What does pr0n mean? I'm guessing it means porn? Then why not just say porn? I've been trying to figure this one out for a while now.

You're the one using ha<ker/el1te speak in your username! I think that using an "0" instead of an "O" will prevent certain filters like this from falsely detecting p0rn (whether they be filters at work or child protection programs, etc).

I'm not sure on the filtering system, but most filter the URL and/or IP. You could try using the integer which would be http://3485924070/. However, since RioCar.org is a virtual host (something I didn't know prior) the server is not set to respond to the integer (or even IP address). This could probably be resolved easily on the server side.

The closest thing I can think of is the one picture in Hugo's gallery, but I doubt the reviewers really looked into every nook and cranny of the site.

No, not really, I need to play nice with the other virtual hosts on the machine. Plus the logo part wouldn't work, as that still uses the empeg.miniinfo.net domain that is mapped to the same server, same IP. Plus, with an upcoming move of the box to a more reliable host soon, the IP will probably change. (Not sure if anyone noticed the bit of downtime yesterday afternoon, it wasn't server troubles).

Sounds like the school I went to. It was a private Christian college that used N2H2/Bess and they had the filter cranked as high as it would go. It basically blocked every cool site on the internet except slashdot and google.

I'm really surprised Slashdot got through, with all their trolls and goatse.cx posters.

Actually, sometimes the slashdot comments didn't get through...I only read the front page anyway.

You know what it might be though? Alot of times, ISP's use the same IP addresses for porn sites and regular sites, and differentiate using virtual hosting..

i'm not sure how much control is over the riocar.org site, but maybe it's ISP also hosts porn sites on that same IP range?

Not that I can see from a quick check of the hosts on that IP. I'll wait a week and see if the filter company responds, if not, I'll submit it for review again.

edit: A quick check of N2H2.com shows actually that they took it out of their database already. So, it should be open to the origional poster at school soon.
