Do these directions sound right?

Do these directions sound right? - 22/05/2002 11:48

Since I'll be coming up to the Empeg meet via 101 from San Jose, do these directions from MapQuest sound right?

4: Take the US-101 N ramp towards SAN FRANCISCO. 0.28 miles

5: Merge onto US-101 N. 32.48 miles

6: Take the I-380 W exit towards I-280/SAN BRUNO. 0.89 miles

7: Merge onto I-380 W. 1.11 miles

8: Take the I-280 N exit towards SAN FRANCISCO. 0.22 miles

9: Merge onto I-280 N. 5.82 miles

10: Take CA-1 N towards 19TH AVENUE/GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. 0.30 miles

11: Merge onto JUNIPERO SERRA BLVD. 0.32 miles

12: Take the BROTHERHOOD WAY exit. 0.09 miles

13: Merge onto BROTHERHOOD WAY. 0.81 miles

14: Turn LEFT onto LAKE MERCED BLVD. 0.50 miles

15: Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto JOHN MUIR DR. 1.12 miles

16: Stay straight to go onto SKYLINE BLVD. 0.53 miles

17: Turn RIGHT onto HARDING RD. 0.04 miles

Well, I don't know that area of SF that well, but I can comment on part of your insructions...

If you're comming all the way from San Jose, you might want to cross over to 280 as early as you can, instead of going all the way up to 380. 380 looks like the best spot to cross over when you look at a map, but 280 is a typically a much, much faster freeway than 101, so it's usually worth it to cross over earlier if you can. Depends on where in San Ho you are.

(Edited do to brain fart)

Though you're quite right that 280 is faster than 880, you meant that 280 is faster than 101.... Good advice though. Do you we have any SF natives to tell us if the directions inside the city are good?

Depends on where in San Ho you are.

I'm at the San Jose airport. So from there, where's the best cut-over on my trip up north?

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 22/05/2002 18:56

The airport is right at the corner of 101 and 880, so you could go either way...

101 is more of a direct route, but is also more prone to traffic, because it pretty much goes right through the middle of all the big cities along the peninsula. 280 is a little bit longer, but everyone always hauls ass on that freeway, cause it's out of the way, and never has much traffic. It's also more of a scenic route, and you get to drive past the Stanford linear accelerator, if you're into that sort of thing.

So, take your pick. If you do want to take 280 the whole way, just take 880 to 280, since you're going to be right there anyway.

So that would be 880 South, towards Santa Cruz, and then 280 North, towards San Francisco.

Should be no problem either way, really.

Thanks! Okay, that's sorted. Now... Anyone have any comments on the remainder of the directions that MapQuest gave me?

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 23/05/2002 10:38

I'm right over there Tony. The best way to get onto 280 is to get onto 880 going south, and about 5 exits down you'll see a sign for san francisco 280 north. If you take 101 you'll have have several opportunities to cross over to 280 but they will be long or slow cross overs.

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 23/05/2002 10:43

Yeah, I looked at the map and going south to hit 280 looks like the best bet.

What about the parts of the directions once I've gotten up into San Francisco? Is that right?

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 23/05/2002 11:05

I think we're running into the Wouldn't Touch It With A 10 Foot Pole problem that often arises in situations having to do with direction in san francisco. You need someone who's done the exact route to vouch for it, otherwise all bets are off.

The left turn is the only thing you really need to worry about. Legal left turns in san francisco are very rare, so just realize you may find yourself in a three right turn situation.

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 23/05/2002 11:28

These are your directions: My comments below:

4: Take the US-101 N ramp towards SAN FRANCISCO. 0.28 miles
-- don't do this
5: Merge onto US-101 N. 32.48 miles
--don't do this
6: Take the I-380 W exit towards I-280/SAN BRUNO. 0.89 miles
--don't do this
7: Merge onto I-380 W. 1.11 miles
--don't do this
8: Take the I-280 N exit towards SAN FRANCISCO. 0.22 miles
--don't do this
9: Merge onto I-280 N. 5.82 miles
--don't do this. instead take 880 south stay in the second lane from the right. after stevens creek blvd get over and take 280 exit. you'll come to a fork immediately that is badly marked, take the right fork for north, left fork is south but that is not obvious.

10: Take CA-1 N towards 19TH AVENUE/GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. 0.30 miles
-- stay in the left lane the entire way and you can ignore signs the highway automaticaly lets you off onto 19th..

11: Merge onto JUNIPERO SERRA BLVD. 0.32 miles
--when you see the 40mph ahead sign, get over to the far right line quickly i think the junipero serra blvd exit comes fast and quick and it's round and circular..

after that, prepare to get lost. i hate that neighborhood. :-D i remember spinning around in my old putt-putt car for a while.....

12: Take the BROTHERHOOD WAY exit. 0.09 miles

13: Merge onto BROTHERHOOD WAY. 0.81 miles

14: Turn LEFT onto LAKE MERCED BLVD. 0.50 miles

15: Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto JOHN MUIR DR. 1.12 miles

16: Stay straight to go onto SKYLINE BLVD. 0.53 miles

17: Turn RIGHT onto HARDING RD. 0.04 miles

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 23/05/2002 13:19

I lived in that area (called 'Outer Sunset') for a year, I drove this route (next to SJ airport) to SF almost daily. enternalSun hit it on the head getting to brotherhood (see below)... The only thing about this area of SF is that it is virtually ALWAYS FOGGY (bring a jacket).

Get to the Boat House from San Jose Airport:

1: Take 880 South: You have to 'drive around' the airport to get to this onramp.

2: Take 280 North (San Francisco) Exit</b> Stay in the second lane from the right. after stevens creek blvd get over and you'll come to a fork immediately that is badly marked, take the right fork for north, left fork is south but that is not obvious. Stay on 280 untill you get into the city. stay in the left lane the entire way and you can ignore signs the highway automaticaly lets you off onto 19th. Note: This is my personal favorite drive (especially during twilight/sunset) and it takes about 30 min driving fast without traffic.

3: Exit BROTHERHOOD WAY. When you see the 40mph ahead sign, get over to the far right line quickly i think the junipero serra blvd exit comes fast and quick and it's round and circular. You'll see various chuches, temples, etc on your right (hence the name). It will dead-end into Late Merced Blvd. (your almost there!)

4: LEFT onto LAKE MERCED BLVD. (easy)
5: SLIGHT RIGHT onto JOHN MUIR DR.
6: Stay straight to go onto SKYLINE BLVD.
7: Turn RIGHT onto HARDING RD.

Lake Merced is actually a couple of lakes and a golf course. Harding rd drives between the two lakes and ends at the golf course club house (i think). I imagine there will be a bunch of tight ass cars in one of these lots listening to loud music (i think the boat house is in the middle of the parking lots) <see attached MapQuest arial photo>

Okay, so the attached file is a low-rez image of the printed page I'm bringing with me. Will that get me there?

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 24/05/2002 12:20

LOL. Wait till you see those streets in that area. I tried doing the 49 mile drive and when it hit that area I immediately went the wrong direction. "slight right" means "you are about to get lost, and do several different u-turns"

no joke

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 24/05/2002 13:48

Take 880 south to 280 North , WAY faster (i do this 3 times a week!)
Take 19th Ave exit off 280 There is a right exit for brotherhood, It loops Right and goes back west under the road you were on
From there the mapquest looks good:
14: Turn LEFT onto LAKE MERCED BLVD. 0.50 miles

15: Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto JOHN MUIR DR. 1.12 miles

16: Stay straight to go onto SKYLINE BLVD. 0.53 miles

17: Turn RIGHT onto HARDING RD. 0.04 miles

Brotherhood basically dead ends into lake merced. You are then tryng to go around the lake to the other side and left right right is the shortest way to go

Heh, if it really were a time machine I'd show up whenever I wanted. Then I'd proceed to be the first one there.

Re: Do these directions sound right? - 25/05/2002 00:15

I tell you what I'm gonna do. When time machines are invented in the future, I will purchase one and I will go to the empeg meet. I may be an old man and my empeg might be broken by then but I will go. So all of you should see me at the meet. Let me know how it went so I'll know what to expect.

If I don't show up then we'll know that time machines won't be invented in my lifetime, or at least not to the extent where I can get my hands on one. So let me know if I do show up so I can start planning other trips.

That just gave me an idea.....hmmmm......When I get my time machine I will take a large sum of money (from the future) and bring it to myself exactly 2 minutes from the now present. So I will take the dollars that were largely inflated in the future and invest them in the present at a higher value than what they were worth in the future. The only trick is I have to promise myself that I will actually do it when I get my time machine. So in about two minutes I wil be a rich man.

Yeah, after seeing Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (you remember the scene), I've tried that many times. Still hasn't worked.

Re: ..So; how many people are FROM the SF area? - 25/05/2002 01:12

I'm (supposed) to be making name tags and the current list that I have has 27 people on it, plus whatever guests each registered person has. If you're coming and didn't register on riocar, send me a personal message if you want a preprinted name tag, otherwise be forced to endure your own handwriting.

See everyone around noon...
