$820 for an empeg on Ebay. - 05/06/2002 11:43

I just noticed a 20GB empeg went for $820 US on Ebay last week. another hit over $700 this week.

While this is still below the original price it is continues to get higher. I suggested a $1000 price not long ago and some doubted it. I say unless another similar product comes out soon by the end of the year I think they will be > $1000, depending on how many break down and sell their units for that price.. I know I'll strongly consider it..

Yeah, I know what you mean. I could sell an empeg to pay for my airfare to the European meet (a really good chunk at least). It will be hard to keep them.

must....... have............ strength

Maybe patrick could design us a through leg design one instead of an SMT one, might not fit in the dash though.

But on a silly thought could you build an linux PC and run the player software on it ?

You probably could... but I suspect that the guys@empeg might not be really happy with the thought of someone stealing their software to use on a computer that they didn't sell.

That would be me - 05/06/2002 13:17

What can I say? I lost one Empeg auction because my cable modem went out just before the end. I was absolutely determined not to lose the next one.

And the fellow who bought the $700 unit was the same person who ran the price up to $820 on me (having checked bid histories). I suspect that the average price will decrease again as I'm fairly certain the two of us were just extremely stubborn and determined purveyors.

I believe that the auctioneers, some of whom clearly made a run on Empegs during the fire sale at the beginning of the year, are safely leaking these on the market at the rate of about one a week or so. By minimizing competition, they are guaranteeing themselves larger sales by reenforcing the perception of the scarcity of these devices.

As was said elsewhere in the thread, still cheaper than buying it new from before the fire sale. Well worth it.

that makes me feel better. i am dying and determined to own one of these but can't afford $700. i hope some kind soul will sell me their extra for $500! hoping against hope!

the worst part about this is that my *friend had an extra one and sold it for $220 a few days ago. i didn't know he had one until after it sold!

Re: That would be me - 05/06/2002 14:08

well if i am lucky enough to win an extra empeg at the euro meet i will sell my spare to a desrving sole providing it is

1 there only empeg as i would hate to think of it being a backup unit when i could provide pleasure to some one else

2 they promise to keep and love it as my original empeg would go that cost me almost a thousand pounds and was worth every penny

I thank the Empeg gods every day for my 10 gig model. If it was'nt for the firesale, there is no WAY I could afford one of these.

No you couldn't. The player is only distributed as an arm binary, and not an x86 binary.

Yep, and besides which it would probably have problems with things like not being able to find the DSP, just for starters.

All true - you're not going to have much luck with the player binary (plus, we would give you an evil stare).

We, on the other hand, do have much of our codebase portable between platforms (given the appropriate compiler).

So when is "RioAmp" coming out then? Is that what we are going to get a look at in Amersfoort?

(man I need a faster machine! It's taking ages to compile this project, and I've got 2 processors munching on it!)

Ooohh... this might be fun. I have a bunch of StrongArm netwinders around here.. wonder if the player s/w can be tricked into running on them..

But why would I do that?

Does that mean you could run it on an IPAQ? (it's running an arm processor)

If you (or Mark) could trick the kernel to mimick an empeg hardware for the player software, I think you could. Would be pretty cool (even though I don't own an Ipaq).

I should have held out longer . I sold my back up 10 gig with tuner and screen color kit for $600 a few weeks ago on ebay.

Re: $820 for an empeg on Ebay. - 06/06/2002 13:21

Indeed. That tuner seems to be worth megabucks on Ebay these days. However, as I said, the $820 was an aberation. Me and this other fellow were very determined. Everyone else out there seems a little more.. well.. sane.

Yes...the good Reverend was quite determined (it wasn't anything personal I assure you.) I imagine he'll be making a formal appearance here pretty soon.

Re: $820 for an empeg on Ebay. - 06/06/2002 17:38

That is an EXCELLENT idea. They will need to make the player software a little more sophisticated though (like not playing the 'snaps' and other sounds from bad files)

What do you know? I buy an empeg and people are already talking about me? Makes me feel special (wiping tears from eye) Good to be aboard.

Hey, cool, perhaps you can tell us where this guy has been lately. Haven't seen him around here in a long time.

Heh, I just paid $701 and change for a 30gb one on eBay. Hurray for me!

Re: $820 for an empeg on Ebay. - 10/06/2002 14:20

Interesting. Then the average price is indeed going up. Kbento drove me up a lot on my 20GB unit but then he paid about $100 less than me on a 30GB. *shrug* As long as you have *A* unit, the HDD size doesn't matter much.

Now, I'm in the waiting mode, waiting for it to show from Canada. I'll be installing it in a 2002 Eclipse GT with a Pioneer DEH-9400 HU.

And to think, I almost got a Music Keg.

Geez.... kinda makes me feel guilty that I got a tuner... and two rio cars for less than 820 bucks a few months ago but I don't think I'll lose any sleep over that.
