When did this feature appear

Either this is new or i haven't found it before

When typing in a name for a search i goofed and pushed cancel and insteadof the whole thing disappearing as i am sure it did before the last letter typed in went back.

It's done this for as far back as I can remember (which of course doesn't necessarily mean a long time ).

I believe (not sure) that this was a 2.0 feature.
