I will have pricing next week for a hard drive group buy. If you are interested, please post here (do NOT e-mail me on this yet). I would like to gauge interest in different sizes (10GB, 20GB, etc.) and brands.
Thanks,

I'm assuming that you mean laptop hard drives? Since this is the BBS for the empeg car, after all.

40GB seems like the best deal at the moment, so put me down as interested in a couple of em.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 03/08/2002 11:11

Weird...

I just logged on to post a "WTB: 48 or 60GB Drive" thread. So put me down as very interested for either of those sizes.

Hi.

I would be interested in one or two drives, 48GB or 60GB.

PS: Please remove that large image from your sig. Using pictures in every post isn't really nice, less protruding and more informative ones are accepted like in pgrzelak's posts though.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 03/08/2002 19:02

I'd be interested also, assuming exchange rates to $AU won't kill my interest.
Around 30GB

Hi Tony, I would be interested in either (1) 30gb, or (2) 60gb. Depending on price of course, and the outcome of my raid thread

Re: Hard drive group buy - 05/08/2002 11:32

Also interested in a 40 gig drive.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 05/08/2002 12:29

Interested in up to 3 60GB drives.

BTW, Newegg.com has IBM 60GB for $332 (much better than what is listed on Pricewatch!).

Re: Hard drive group buy - 05/08/2002 13:20

I would be interested in a 20GB drive, but only if the price were ridiculously (i.e., well under market value) low.

You may be better off waiting till this is over and buy the 20GB from someone who just upgraded...

Re: Hard drive group buy - 06/08/2002 16:49

I think Pricewatch refers you to Newegg.com last time I was looking and unfortunately I just bought another hdd ($118.00 for a 30GB) just two days ago, damn the luck. My 12GB empeg drive was critically low, down to 20mb.
Posted by: jwickis

Re: Hard drive group buy - 07/08/2002 18:18

Just received said drive via Fedex regular Newegg.com is fast. Be forewarned from them the drive is very bare bones only drive inside of antistatic bag {NO jumpers NO screws} inside of a FedEx box that's 20 times it's size (with appropiate stuffing). The drive is installed with only one hitch (main drive connector fell apart trying to remove the glue:( conn. clips break very easily) No problem I hope in the future with such, since I just put conn. back on and melted the conn back together with a soldering iron. Works now but the real test will be in the rugged SUV enviroment (read not a cushy car type SUV) it spends 98% of time.
Thanks to the well laid out drive upgrade section at Rio.org if you follow to the letter there will be no problems.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 07/08/2002 19:09

how much was the drive after shipping? Pricewatch now shows the price including shipping so the ones posted by brad include shipping (at least i assume so) what dose newegg.com charge? and are newegg.com refurbed drives?

Re: Hard drive group buy - 07/08/2002 21:08

Glad to know that a cable can be fixed... I tore one of mine too and they are expensive after shipping for a new one.
Posted by: jwickis

Re: Hard drive group buy - 08/08/2002 17:52

Well I didn't exactly tear it, the middle or primary connector fell into two pieces, the retainer clip poped off. I did have to carefully realign the existing holes where the pins bit into the cable. I think I probably just got lucky. I've had it in the vehicle a couple of times now and no problems with vibration losing connection.
BTW- How much does a cable cost, just in case and where did you get one?
Posted by: jwickis

Re: Hard drive group buy - 08/08/2002 17:59

$118.00 free shipping and the drives are new.
But like I said you get nothing more than a drive in a anti-static bag, NO screws (I used 2 from the old drive as suggested but not encouraged, by the FAQ) and NO jumpers (I jerry rigged a full sized drive jumper to work). I know, vibration will probably get me all around but the RTV should work to hold everything together...............................shouldn't it?.

Whoops got the two mixed 'jury-rigged' is the good one and 'jerry-built' the negative conotation. No offense to any Germans intended.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 10/08/2002 05:04

You guys crack me up! The first round of pricing was competitive with the other prices posted. I showed my supplier the pricing that needed to be beaten. I was supposed to have the pricing e-mailed to me yesterday and I will follow up today.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 13/08/2002 19:38

No problem (with me). You recovered nicely. It is just considered poor etiquette to sell things in someone else's post. Starting a new thread is best.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 13/08/2002 19:40

I didn't realize that this was somone selling from his own business... I thought group buy was a bunch of memebers getting together to get a better price, didn't know it was someones business till I read some other posts about the original poster selling EMPEGS as well...my bad... I made a new thread.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 13/08/2002 21:13

No problem. If you have a better price and good service, you should get the business. I will have my pricing up this week.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 23/08/2002 14:22

I'm trying to get better prices on these drives but all of my sources are on their 2nd or 3rd round of quotes. Unless something comes up, the prices I have will be no better than the prices that can be found elsewhere on the internet.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 27/08/2002 08:43

Thx Dave. I may order me up one today. Anyone have any experience w. Googlegear?

Re: Hard drive group buy - 27/08/2002 09:39

I usually check here :
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/table.htm#Travelstar
for latest IBM Travelstar drives.
Then I just paste the "Model Number" e.g. IC25T060ATCS05
into www.pricewatch.com.
That usually finds the lowest price out there.
Posted by: Rezolution

Re: Hard drive group buy - 28/08/2002 14:19

If you like www.pricewatch.com, you might want to use www.pricegrabber.com as well, they offer a similar service. All I can tell you is buyer beware... there are a lot of shady people that have "one time buys" and "must call on phone and specifically state pricewatch price". Also watch because some items are refurbs.

Re: Hard drive group buy - 28/08/2002 14:20

I just ordered a 60gb... i was sick of having mp3 stored on my hd that I couldn't put on the empeg... 108 GB, here I come!
Posted by: Rezolution

Re: Hard drive group buy - 28/08/2002 14:21

It is nearly impossible to beat Googlegears prices. They can actually sell some items at a loss to steal business from other people. I don't understand why they do that because most people who "look for the lowest price" aren't going to stay loyal to Googlegear if the can find something cheaper at another site. Googlegear kinda reminds me of Walmart...

Re: Hard drive group buy - 28/08/2002 14:27

I noticed you can buy 20 packs of the drives for a bit cheaper... group buy? not worth all that to save 7 bucks or whatever.
