Black empeg sleds

Black empeg sleds - 20/09/2004 17:33

Yeah, they're going back into production. I just ordered the tool needed to cutout the tabs. That should be here Friday at the earliest. If that happens, the sleds should be ready to go out the following week.

Ordering should open right after I verify they have been made properly.

Sweet! I was just thinking about how I regretted missing the first batch...

Re: Black empeg sleds - 20/09/2004 22:38

I'd just like to say that the black sleds are sweet. I love the fact that the lips of the sled don't stand out because they're bare metal any more. There are two issues that people might need to consider, though. First, the inside left and right sides of the sled will get scratched to the point that the black powder coat rubs away. This is still much preferable to the bare metal all over, though. Second, the sled I've got fits my MkII like a glove. Better than the original sled, IMO. But I really have to fiddle to get my MkIIa in there. I imagine it would loosen up if I used the MkIIa more, but I don't.

Still, all in all, a great purchase. Even better if you can just take the harness and plug off of a sled you're not currently using.

I noticed this also on the sled I personally used in my Trooper while the one I used to test didn't have this issue. I just bent the tabs outward a little and that did the trick for me.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 20/09/2004 22:48

The spring tabs that hold the empeg to the horizontal center? I can believe that. I don't want to bend mine out, though, as I fear it would then start fitting the MkII poorly.

yeah, the ones on the side.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 20/09/2004 23:11

Are the prices still the same for the sleds and wiring?
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 20/09/2004 23:17

I don't think I will have any connectors this time around, but I have a friend that expressed interest in making harnesses. The price for the sled will likely be the same.

I did this on my _stock_ sled for a Mk2a. The sled has a little 'give' in it such that it can bend out of square slightly if its mounting hole is a tight fit - in my case it's tighter on the sides rather than at the top. Bear in mind also that the locking tabs effectively push in on the sled...The amount that the sled bends is barely noticeable, but it can be enough to affect the empeg's fit.

Sweet; just like it noted that Im interested. Will keep looking here for a chance to order

I have to say, the black sled is must. Your dash will look so much neater when the empeg is out.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 15:41

How big is the production run? I'm interested in about 5 sleds for myself and some buddies.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 16:24

We planned to run 75

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 19:29

Here's a shot of the sled in my WRX (see attached). You can see the small nicks on the left and right side caused by the drive tray screws on the side of the empeg. They are barely noticeable, and the overall look of the black sled is a million times better than the straight metal ones.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 19:29

And here's a wider shot.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 21:42

That is definitely something I will have to get. My original is spray painted with black appliance paint, but I have a couple nicks on the front of the bent edges. So it looks really black, then I see spots of silver peeking out. Yup I'll need a powder coated sled.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 22:27

Looks nice! It looks like you cut off more of the WRX bezel then you needed... it that just the photo?
Posted by: loren

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/09/2004 22:50

Just the photo. The fascia fits VERY snuggly in there. The fascia doesn't sit in front of the bezel, it's surrounded by it for a more flush look.

Remember this thread?

Neater than this?

Just kidding. Actually, my metal sled shows with the empeg IN, so I might try a black one. Hm, that would look nice.

check out the Addons line under the bbs logo, you'll find a "Sleds" link that goes to rob's website for the sleds.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 13/10/2004 17:06

is this run sold out already!!!???
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 13/10/2004 17:38

No, as usual there are stupid things that pop up that prevent these things from being produced in a timely manner. As soon as we get some circuit board back (because some component blew up), the sleds will be run.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 13/10/2004 17:47

ok....the tabs on mine are all broken and the HU just kinda bounces around in the dash!

Re: Black empeg sleds - 07/11/2004 22:45

I was just curious if there was any update on these?
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 08/11/2004 00:00

They're punched and are in the process of being bent. Paint next, then shipping.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 08/11/2004 06:54

The website says "sold out". Does that mean that that last run sold out or does it mean the current run is also all sold ?
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 08/11/2004 11:23

Last run sold out. The new batch hasn't been offered for sale yet.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 29/11/2004 15:18

Any news on the run?
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 02/12/2004 12:31

Bending today. Welding probably today. Painting soon after.

Re: Black empeg sleds - 02/12/2004 13:40

Given any thought to offering a powder coat service for people's existing stock sleds?

I can do that.
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 02/12/2004 17:25

I just tested the first one of the new batch to be bent and welded. It works. We're on our way. There should be about 80 sleds for sale soon.

I pray I am able to get one!
Posted by: toolman

Re: Black empeg sleds - 20/01/2005 18:30

So...

How soon? Its been over a month!
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 21/01/2005 00:36

It has been more than a month actually. All I can say is that they are definitely coming. They're punched now. Bending, putting on hardware, and painting is all that's left. I don't know when we will be able to get around to it. But, they are coming.
Posted by: toolman

Re: Black empeg sleds - 07/03/2005 20:38

So its been another month. Im not nagging, but I don't want to miss out. Any news?
Posted by: robricc

Re: Black empeg sleds - 07/03/2005 21:43

No news. Still coming, I just don't know exactly when. I've decided to set up a mailing list for notifications of black sleds availability. Go here and stick your email address in there and subscribe. There will likely only be 1 message, but I will send out that email before posting here (though I will still post here immediately).

I guess if you're really jonesing for black sleds you could put the email address of your cell phone in there. Usually something like [email protected].

Re: Black empeg sleds - 07/05/2005 02:21

Just in case I missed anything on the notification list (since I just found this thread now)... did I miss anything? Any still available?
