Re: Selling 80gb MINT spare MK2a - 17/03/2005 15:13

Well... I have some concerns here.

I am not saying this isn't a legitimate deal, I do have a couple of points to make. (and no I am not eliminating competition )

I bought my empeg from an individual name "heavyhitter" or something to that effect a few years ago. I sent money to the name and address he gave me. The certified check was signed over to "Austin Laesch" and cashed. (different name than originally started with) A few weeks went by... NO EMPEG. I called him repeatedly got excuses and finally went to the police. Here and local to him. NO Help. Only after I got the FBI involved did I get an empeg... Not the one that I paid for but I did get one. So I did not drop the charges. Only under this kind of pressure did I finally get what I paid for. (months later) He sold the same unit to half a dozen people.
FBI charged him with interstate wire and security fraud, and grand theft I believe. (more than $500) Many counts.

Concern 1) This person is offering a very good deal (heck I want to buy it)--outside the psuedo protection of ebay. Not to mention below the grand theft limit of $500.
Concern 2) This person is very close to Peoria, Illinois where Austin operated.
Concern 3) This person is a new poster. Welcome to the forum btw I am the paranoid one.
Concern 4) This person made a reference to my sale "selling out" where I mentioned Austin Laesch.

Maybe this is a whole lot of nothing... But I stress legit or not... buyer beware.

My apologies if I am barking up the wrong tree.

As an assurance, Mrtech could perhaps post his real name, photographs of the player in question, including its accessories and its serial number on the about screen, and supply an email address to prospective buyers that isn't an anonymous account on a free webmail service. I would also recommend that the buyer obtain the seller's home address and verify it, don't deal through PO boxes.

Re: Selling 80gb MINT spare MK2a - 17/03/2005 15:46

Yea, no offence to the seller but I am not a trusting individual thus my “where are you” question. He’s about 5 hours away so I am debating the drive.

I did break my “don’t grab your ankles” rule once and bought a tuner from this board. However that was not as much $. While I would have hated myself for letting some screw me I could live with the loss. Besides, the guy I bought it from was from North Carolina. While I’m sure there are bad people there too I’ve never met anyone that wasn’t super nice or honest.

I guess we haven't met yet.

Hi, I'm Bitt, one of the board's resident co-jackasses (we divide that title up), and I'm from North Cackalackey.

I used to live in Fayetteville.

And it should also be said that there have been many successful transactions here in the For Sale forum. Reports of problems are extremely rare.

But it's worth checking things out, and using caution and suspicion, in any transaction.

Re: Selling 80gb MINT spare MK2a - 17/03/2005 16:37

Naaa, I bet you’re honest and compared to me nice.

I base my opinions on an experience I had when I was 17. To make a long story short my car broke down around Winston NC coming back from a winter break trip to FT. Lauderdale. With no money, no place to stay or a way to get back home everyone I ran into down there helped me out, me, a punk-ass-northern-kid. A motel manager let me stay there for a few day for free; a guy working at the local gas station took half a day off and drove me around to help me find a $100 car; and a Western Union employee gave me $200 out of his own pocket when the money my parents sent didn’t arrive by end of day.

Nice people.

Well, it's nice to hear that someone else is holding up my end of the stick.

Good thing you didn't order an egg cream.

No but I did one time I ask someone wanted a pop. They thought I was going hit them. But that was in FL

Re: Selling 80gb MINT spare MK2a - 17/03/2005 17:03

I actually have a similar story about North Carolina. I think it was 2 years ago during a crazy snow storm that closed all 3 major airports in New York. I was down in Tampa FL buying a cheap Isuzu Trooper. Down there I was using the A/C which actually worked. It was odd considering the vehicle's age and price. I didn't think to check that the heat worked.

Anyway, it started getting cold once I hit NC and I eventually had to pull-off the highway (in Lumberton I think) when I was unable to defrost the windshield because no heat + ice storm = icy windshield (which is not very good to be driving with at 2AM). I took it to an Isuzu dealer in-town the next morning. They were working on that car all day long. They ended up only charging me something like $40. Really nice people.

I would have been bent-over in NY at any car dealer's garage. The going rate for work up here is $75 per hour + diagnosis (about $90).

Re: Selling 80gb MINT spare MK2a - 17/03/2005 17:03

thanks for hijacking my thread. I have over 230+ online refrences/feedbacks from buying and selling stuff.

I will proceed with an ebay auction down the road I suppose.

thanks anyways. serial number of the unit is 040103789 just for all you skepticals. Redrum? if you want to meet me then I'll do that. otherwise I'm going to keep it. Maybe sell it on ebay at a later date.

Hijacking a thread keeps it on top.

Thanks but I'll pass, I was going to get it for the wife but she won't do a five hour drive with me to get it so the heck with her. Good luck.
