built tuner kits?

built tuner kits? - 24/10/2006 21:41

If I was to offer a number of built and tested tuners for, say, £110 plus postage, would anyone be interested?

I need to get rid of these damn things

I would probably buy a couple, but I hate to take advantage. I still have 3 of the unbuilt kits sitting around though. Having some pre-built ones would be nice though....

probably. Yes.

I'll take one.

Re: built tuner kits? - 25/10/2006 22:58

That's a deal (lower priced tuner) upon a deal (lower priced install).

I don't want to sound demeaning, but listing empeg parts on eBay DOES get attention and lead to sales. My not-really-constant lit button listings have generated a decent amount of sales, both through eBay and via clickthroughs to my website (heck, it's the #3 Google result for "empeg ebay" :^P).

If you carefully follow the eBay policies (my notes, attached) on linking to external pages, you can make a compliant listing which generates clickthroughs legitimately. And you'll catch the eye of people who view the fairly constant stream of players for sale there.

I suspect there are a fair amount of empeg owners who either don't know about the BBS or don't visit it for many reasons. But they do find eBay, either because they're on eBay ready to buy or because a search engine pops it up. The advertising is worth the small listing fee (tip: if the item doesn't sell, you relist within 90-some days, and it sells that time, you pay only one listing fee, not two!).

The kits are indeed listed on ebay, as they have been for three weeks. I've sold ONE so far! At that rate it will take nearly one and a half years to sell them all, and cost nearly £150 in listing fees

And I'll still have £2500 worth of tuner modules I can't use or sell left over

As I currently don't have any design work on and as a result have much time and no income, I thought I could solve two problems at once.

I will do 6 built tuners. If anyone wants one, first come first served at £100 plus postage. Note that these will have an aerial cable with no connector fitted as I have run out of them and can't currently get any more. Any local car shop should sell them.

I already have four tuners here now, so I don't really need the expense of a full kit.
But I have noticed several tuners (mostly taym's) with apparently dead tuner modules inside them, so this seems to be a likely future failure point.

How much are you offering individual tuner modules for?

As many as you want at £26 each (up to a maximum of 100, which is what I have as excess stock). This is what I paid for them. Postage dependent on weight, but I would thing £10 would cover 1 to 10 or so.

Cool. Are these pin-compatible with the factory tuners, or just for PCATS tuners?

Thanks

Re: built tuner kits? - 26/10/2006 16:21

They're obviously pin-compatible with the pcats tuners I don't think they are pin compatible with a factory tuner, but they are functionally compatible and physically somewhat smaller, so it should be easy to graft one in with about 10 wires. I can send datasheets on both modules if you want, but I don't have a factory tuner to check it with. I DO have the circuit diagrams for both...

There must be someone out on the Internet who needs a small batch these parts and can't meet the factory's minimum order. How to connect with them... Newsgroups? Electronics forums? eBay, again?

That would be me ... Putting it in the car tomorrow

I actually thought these would sell in no time at all .. I assumed there must be a large number of empeg users without a tuner.

Apparently I was wrong ... or they don't mind missing it :P

There should be, according to my estimates, at least 2900 empegs minus tuners floating around, bearing in mind the number of empegs made vs the number of tuners made. I guess it was successful in making people not use the radio

A little too succussful, in fact. After building and installing the tuner kit I got, I don't think I've actually used it beyond the initial post-install test. Not even once. Well, maybe once, just to show someone that I could get radio from a kit that I put together. It was a fun project, though.

Two of our tuners get used most of each day here. The other two are awaiting our next new vehicles (in a year or three), where they'll get wired in.

Re: built tuner kits? - 30/10/2006 15:12

Let me understand fully. This is something you can install pre-built by just connecting a cable and then connecting it to the antenna on your car, is that correct?

I'm constantly debating with myself on whether RioCar would satisfy my needs. The fact of not being able to use the commands on the wheel is discouraging. Pause/Play/Next/Previous... those are handy commands to have on the wheel...

There are various solutions to this issue. Search the board for "SWiX", and you can probably find a few of them.

Re: built tuner kits? - 01/11/2006 00:11

The tuner will further help you by allowing connection of a steering wheel control stalk. Sure, it's not integrated dash controls, but it helps. (Maybe the SWiX thing needs the tuner to connect; I forget).

Re: built tuner kits? - 01/11/2006 08:36

Or you could get a factory steering wheel -> Sony Stalk adapter and then plug that into the tuner. YMMV on how well it works. Search around, there may be someone with the same/similar car to yours that you can ask.

As always, Check the FAQ.

Patrick,
If you still have a built kit available, I'll take one. I tried the link at the top of the page, but it is password protected.

Yes, I'm afraid that the website is completely broken, and I don't have any access to it to fix it or move it. It's a damn nuisance. At least I have a backup of the thing.

PM me with your details and I'll tell you how to pay.

No. SWiX translates the steering wheel codes to an IR signal, basically turning your steering wheel controls into a remote control.

Now that was a nice Christmas present. The tuner showed up on the 26th. Thanks Patrick, I owe you a pint (if I ever show up to one of the owners meets).
