OT Wanted: small amplifier

OT Wanted: small amplifier - 23/06/2010 23:41

Dignan's post about cleaning out his computer room gave me the idea to post this. If this is not kosher, some mod let me know and I'll remove it.

Due to my changed living situation, I'm in a position where I have to solicit donations occasionally. Does anyone have a small amplifier of any kind that they'd be willing to donate to a Christian mission in Central America?

Basically, I've got a training room with a projector (also donated), but I'd like to put in some permanent speakers instead of using an old set of computer speakers every time I need audio. I have a set of 6x9 speakers that I pulled from my Jeep that I don't really need/use, but I need something to amplify the sound from the computer to the speakers.

An old car stereo with an Aux input, an old 2 channel car amp, an old T-amp from the parts bin, an old home stereo receiver, whatever. It just has to be small enough to put in a suitcase and carry down here. If anyone has anything that they'd like to get out of their hair, let me know. I'll pay reasonable shipping costs.

Thanks!

John,I have something that might be suitable - I used it in my Corolla with the empeg for a few years. It is about the size of a good sized hardback book. Will check the make & model tomorrow.

edit:
This is the amp, and going by my install thread it is ~8 years old...

That looks perfect. I imagine I should be able to power it with a 12v wall wart.

PM on the way.

Depends on the amp's output power...

You need to look at the max current draw and get a supply accordingly.

I have an old 12V car amp rated for 70W per side.

So 140W is a hefty wall-wart. ;D

Also, look for pro-audio gear (like musicians might buy) vs. audiophile gear that guys who want to buy stereos with too much money in their pocket.

Most of the time, musician stuff can be had a lot cheaper.

I realized afterward that I'd need something more powerful. I have a 12v bench power supply that can do 3 amps.

Should be able to do 41 watts at 13.8 volts. Hopefully that will suffice.

Parts express has a bunch of fun (and tiny) Class D amps.

I've been thinking of picking up one or 2 to have some fun.

Thanks for the heads up. The amp Phoenix42 sent is working pretty well, but I might try one of these and see if it puts out enough juice.
