New Tuner for sale - 08/01/2002 16:38

This ain't gonna make me very popular on this BBS but oh well. Call me a capitalist pig all you want....I've prepared myself for it ;-[

I've decided to go another route and not use the tuner that I recieved from SB. So it's up on Ebay. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1319884825

Cheers,

I don't see anything wrong with selling it on ebay as long as the intent isn't to make some huge profit. But obviously this might be your intent considering your "Buy It Now" is set for $250.. eeesh... I think for $250 i'd just buy a radio deck and a new amp or something. Ohh well.. to each his own.

I want to know just when it happened that the idea of making a profit on a transaction became a dishonorable thing.

For God's sake, people -- an item is worth what a willing buyer will pay for it, no more, no less. (Well, less if you were to take to heart the sentiments of a lot of people on this bbs.)

If he wants to sell his tuner for $250, and someone is willing to pay that much for it, then you have two happy people, plus apparently a whole lot of arbiters of capitalist morality who are unhappy, people for whom the transaction is none of their damn business!

You think $250 is an unfair price? Then I urge you not to buy it. Instead, buy one of the many $99 tuners floating around instead.

Re: New Tuner for sale - Bend over first - 08/01/2002 18:10

If your reserve is anywhere close to that Buy Now price; Good luck.
You might rape an uneducated ebay user with that price but keep in mind your potential customer base is limited to people who own empegs already and probably don't think it's worth having a radio at that price.
You can always hook up another deck that has a radio to the AUX port.

I don't shame you for trying to be clever, I just don't think it will work.
Meanwhile, my tuner module sits in my dash going unused. I'd gladly take $250 for it.

I made a few test bids and the reserve price is sky high. I went as far as $30 and couldn't scratch it.

Here's a little lession in ebay marketing. Set the starting bid at $0 with no reserve. Granted you could get stuck with nothing or less then you paid for it but 99.9% of the time your going to get what your expect or even more. Plus you don't get flamed. Hehe

And you right, the point of sale is not my business, but noone has bought it yet therefore im not interupting thier sale ; D ...by the way, im not going around try to make negative comments about people sales, I was just looking for a tuner myself and came across this... i though it was obserd to pay more for the turner then what I payed for them empeg itself.

Off Topic:

Rare items tend to end up pricey by the end. I tried selling a pretty expensive wine the other day with no reserve and it ended up going for $7.99. Oh well.

But when you purchase a large number of them and sell them off one at a time, you're generating an artificial shortage. I'm not saying that this is necessarily the case with the people that are posting on this board, but it's certainly a counterpoint to your statements.

I doubt that anybody has purchased more than 10 units for resale. That's 10 units out of 3000, or about 1/3 of 1 percent of the total number of players. It would be pretty hard to generate an "artificial shortage" on that basis.

And even if somebody had managed to corner every single empeg for sale in the known universe, I wouldn't fault him for marketing them in such a fashion as to maximize the return on his investment. In actuality, there are a number of different people selling empegs, and the market has spoken: a 10GB empeg is worth about $500.

Why anyone thinks that selling a product for what the market is willing to pay is unethical is beyond me.

Re: New Tuner for sale - 09/01/2002 02:17

As an extreme example, let's say that someone has cornered the market on gasoline. All of a sudden, he decides that gasoline will sell for $5 a gallon (this is 4-5 times what it sells for in my area of the US currently). People will be forced to purchase gasoline at $5 a gallon. They cannot subsist without it, for if they did go without it, they wouldn't be able to get to their jobs, which they would lose, etc., etc., and they die. This is, to me, unethical. Now, I realize that the empeg is not a required commodity, but your statement ``Why anyone thinks that selling a product for what the market is willing to pay is unethical is beyond me'' does not qualify itself at all.

The sort of laissez-faire capitalism that you seem to be espousing worked very well in the United States for about 100 years, at least for all the fatcats. Everyone else got shat upon. So you may want to rethink your ideas, for our sake, before you get into public office.

And that's all I'll say.

Is it still that cheap in the UK?

The "new tuner" under discussion up on ebay has now topped $100 and it has not even scratched the reserve price.

Re: New Tuner for sale - 09/01/2002 12:02

Except no one person has cornered the empeg market so your example doesn't really apply. A better example would be if there was 4000 gallons of gasoline left in the whole world and the oil companies decided to have a fire sale and sell out at 10 cents a gallon. A few days later there are people selling 1 gallon packs at auction for *whatever people are willing to pay*. Is it fair? Is it wrong?

I think it was probably *more* wrong that they were fire-saled. By who cares at this point? I'd say it's ok to shake your head disapprovingly, e.g. radio tuner has a reserve price of a $399. etc.

What professional football team do you play for anyway? I can't make out the jersey.

Re: New Tuner for sale - 09/01/2002 14:04

Geez, someone actually paid the $250. What's this world coming to?

If anyone out there wants to sell a tuner at a reasonable price without going through ebay, let me know. Just reply to this message and I should get it.

Re: New Tuner for sale - 09/01/2002 15:24

If I set an outrageously high price on something, I'd probably bid on it myself with an alternate account to save face.

Then I'd remember I have self-respect and take my losses like a man.

That would be illegal of course.

Re: New Tuner for sale - 10/01/2002 00:45

Its interesting how the 'winner' is a new user with 0 feedback. Could be someone 'saving face', someone else trying to screw with people selling empeg/rio car stuff for higher prices, or could just be a new ebayer. I kinda wonder, but then realize i have better things to do with my time, like learn how to interface the sony stick remote with the Rio Car.

Re: New Tuner for sale - 12/01/2002 06:28

lo,

I found that last August the price in Norway was much the same as the price in the UK, we've gone down a bit now, but imho you guys still have it cheaper when you consider how much everything else costs in Norway
