20G rio car for sale - 11/02/2002 12:56

I purchased a rio car player from store.sonicblue.com a couple of weeks ago without fully realizing just how difficult it would be to install it. So I'm selling it now. It's the 20Gig one, purchased for $299 + tax ($343.62 total). First person to give me what I paid for it gets it.

The unit is complete, with the car rail, the remote, all the cables, etc, etc. Most of that stuff just sat in my living room for two weeks without being touched. I did install the software on my pc and put a lot of music on the player, which is a nice bonus. You can erase anything you don't like, but I've got lots of classical music on it, a lot of "oldies" rock, and some more modern stuff.

Pity, I'd just keep it as a home player, still a bargain at the price

Then again, I *am* biased.

I was thinking of posting a lengthy reply, offering all of the usual help on installations, but then I thought, no, better that the player go to someone who will enjoy the installation process.

Or who is at least down with the concept of delayed gratification!

Agreed.

It's not that I'm unwilling to wait--it's really more of a financial decision. I'm not much of an audiofile, and paying $70 for the installation, plus another $150 to $500 for an amp, on top of the cost of the player itself, is just not something I want to do. I didn't realize that I'd need a separate amp... This player is great for someone who already has a nice audio system with an amplifier installed, and even better for someone who's willing to install the unit him/herself.

BTW, I can just return it to sonicblue.com and get my money back. Only then it will probably disappear forever and noone will get to have it, and I'd rather find a good home for it...

FWIW, (and I expect Ithis'll make some folks on the BBS cringe!) I paid all of $79 for my close-out amp (it sounds great!).

What you say makes perfect sense. It's not for me to say what is important to you. Good luck with the sale.

Just to toss it out there in case you weren't aware... depending on whether or not your dash is Double DIN, and your stock head unit has the inputs... you COULD always just put the empeg through the head unit. Don't mean to insult your intelligence if you already knew... just trying to salvage the empeg love. =].

I don't have mine installed and don't plan to for quite a while. I have mine hooked into my computer and play it that way. If you play around with it you might change your mind and keep it. The car isn't the only place it can be used.

Yeah, but I'd rather just get a large hard drive with twice the storage for half the money. I can write my own UI to manage the playlists (yeah, yeah, I know what you'll say, but I'm talking bang for the buck). For me at least, the whole point of having a player as a separate box is that it goes into the car dash.

I do have to go with him here, folks. As much as I love having the player on my desk, I couldn't see owning one just for that purpose. It's only useful as an on-the-desk player if I can also bring it into the car and pick up the playlist where I left off.

The player just screams to be installed in the car. Laura, get that puppy installed.

If I could afford to I would in a heart beat but right now I can't. Tax refund didn't cover what I have put out so far for them. I've been tempted to sell my tuner to help pay it off but I think I will want it in the future.

I'm very happy with it as a desk player. WinAmp always tended to skip when I would be doing any work on the computer and the empeg does not.

I am expecting some money in the future and as soon as it comes in I will run out and get it installed, one in my Dodge Caravan and the other in my Nova. Now I have a red face plate for the Nova which should look great.

i understand that money really does have alot of weight on some of us, as i do. i'm a poor student and right now i salvaged my crappy Bose system and plan to use that until i save up for some real speakers and amp. But if you look around for used stuff or stuff going on sale... or even radio shack stuff! ... it could be done. It may not sound great, but buys me time to save up. Just my few cents. Which is literally what i got in my pockets!

It would be my pleasure to take that unit off your hands.
I currently have caring, sharing amplifiers and speakers who are looking for
that special friend.
Your player will soon be at home when the included tunes assimilate into
my varied playlists.

I tried (in vain) to purchase from sonicblue, but gave up in despair when they
explained to me that for international orders, they would soon have an outlet
in Europe that I could deal with.
My "polite" reply to them pointed out that Australia is NOT a country in Europe!

Assuming that the player is still available, please contact me: [email protected]
Thanks heaps

The international (worldwide) store for Rio Car players was in Europe. We shipped a lot of units to Australia. Too late now though.

I acutally only payed $45 for my amp (got it wholesale) and did the installation myself.
