PC gaming, how can I make it better?

PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 06:00

So, now that Loren the candyman has got me hooked on this battlefield 1942 game, Im wondering what I can do to improve my gaming experience.
This is my first foray into PC gaming, so I'm sure my PC is not optimized for it, and I'm wondering what I could do to improve my current system.
Its a Dell Optiplex GX110
Pentium 3 866Mhz
256 MB ram
ATI radeon 7000 32MB video card.
AT&T Cable Broadband

What I'd most like to improve is the frame rate that I get from playing multiplayer.
Should I upgrade the CPU (this MB can go up to 1Ghz), more memory (I could go to 512 pretty easily) or would a better video card be the ticket (a 64MB card maybe?)

I'm running the game 800X600 16bit, to see if that would help, but I really cant tell the difference between that and the 32bit setting. I tried a couple of other things but I'm pretty much shooting in the dark here.

I know "all of the above" is probably the best option, but I cant do that right now.
I dont want to dump tons of money into this PC just for this one game, but I could do a bit of tweaking. Just need to know what direction to tweak in.

Anybody out there got any advice or pointers?

Thanks,
Zachary

I'm a semi-avid gamer, and I find that I update my I/O equipment the most frequently. This includes the video card, monitor, mouse, keyboard, soundcard, speakers and any other device you might prefer (like a joystick). Your processor will hold up for some time, but memory is still really cheap so that's not a bad upgrade. If money is an issue, you can't beat memory for a dirt cheap upgrade. If money isn't so much an issue, figure out what brings you the most joy (stunning 3D sound, 1024x768 32-bit 30 fps video, whatever) and buy the gear that matches.

As for what you upgrade with, go to the experts. Try anandtech.com or tomshardware.com and do your research. I've never been turned in the wrong direction by either site, and a minimum of research means the difference between hardware you'll replace in a year vs. two or three years.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 09:09

You've chosen to "benchmark" your first PC gaming experience against a piece of software that has exceptionally steep system requirements.

For starters, I believe that the video card you just spec'd doesn't comply with that game's minimum system requirements. I seem to recall BF1942's readme states that it requires a card with 64mb of video memory and onboard T&L-- meaning only the most recent cutting edge cards will match that requirement.

Your system should be fine to play most other games. Give Quake 3 a go and see what kinds of frame rates you get.

If you wanted to get a good idea of how your machine performs compared to others, you might want to get GLExcess (OpenGL) , and 3dMark 2001 (DirectX). Plus, it's eye-candy; very nice to look at.

Speaking of things that are nice to look at, I just ordered some of these [video review by 3dGameMan]. I've had a chance to play with these at a couple computer shows, and they are great. One thing though, the review is of the wireless version, which, if you don't plan on using them much, are great. However, I plan to use them quite a lot (as most, even casual, gamers would), so I opted for the wired version (which are also cheaper ). Either way, they are going to make BF1942 kick even more ass.

Speakers

I'm a proud owner of the original 4.1 set. I've had them since spring of 2000, and they're still going strong. I simply blast away my friends with them.

Now you can buy a refurbished 4.1 set from them for $150. That's damn good. I bought mine when they were still sold only on their website, and I was on a waiting list for 4 months. Sorry, but the MarkII waiting list had nothing on this one, because they made the sets much more slowly, so fewer people got them. it was agony.

So in conclusion: BUY THEM.

But I'm sure that other people here will suggest other systems. I obviously biased towards these babies, so maybe I'm not the best to ask. But I will say that you can buy a digital decoder for the 5.1 set.

I'd also have to say that buying a good set of speakers is a wise purchase. Like I said, I've had these speakers for two and a half years, and if they don't blow out, I'll have them for another 2.5. Speakers will tend to be among your longest-lasting pieces of computer equipment.

That system should do you pretty well. One thing that i've found helps was something that someone here at work sent out...

Try setting Sound Detail to Low and enabling sound Hardware Acceleration.

I have a feeling that this will help many people. For me it had a more noticeable impact on performance than changing any of the graphics options did. Before doing this, my framerate would have large and sudden dropoffs when I got into the middle of intense action. They'd be so bad that the game would get choppy. I run a 1.4 ghz Athlon with 512 mb ram, GeForce 4 Ti4200, and Soundblaster Audigy soundcard on Windows XP, all latest official drivers.

This also worked even more noticeably on my friend's system, which is slower and has a less powerfull soundcard (Soundblaster Live).

I suspect that either there's some kind of bug or the sounds don't offload onto soundcard hardware very well, especially under higher detail sound settings, thus shooting cpu usage way up at times.

Audigy's normally have around 3 or 4 % cpu usage I think, but on this game you can definitely see a difference in framerate when you have high detail sounds on, get into a large battle, and choose the Disable All Sounds option to compare the difference.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 12:31

Yeah, I'd agree on the speakers, yet I've had negative experiences with the 5.1 system. It took them two months to replace a subwoofer that failed, and from the looks of their web board, A LOT of them have been failing. If you're gaming, the 4.1 system should do you fine, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper and more reliable. If you are gonna lay out the money for a 5.1 system, buy a cheap home theater speaker system with 5.1 analog inputs and a dolby decoder.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 15:30

Good point! There's a few other things that can be disabled in most games with little effect on anything other than increased framerates. Aside from the sound, also look for fancy shadowing, etc. There should be a whole list of options in the video settings of the game, as well as the sound settings. Also try www.battlefield1942.com to see if there's a section in there that might tell you anything.

If you did upgrade, I'd target the video card first. Seems to always be the biggest bang for the buck. So much runs off of just that, that I think if you kept that card and went to the 1 Gig CPU I dobt you'd notice a single bit of improvement. But go to a Geforce 4 card for example, and it'll be night vs. day on speed.

I'm not up on the ATI cards, I had one ages ago and hated the lack of support for it. They are a lot better now, and one of those would work as well. As was mentioned, check Tom's hardware site and see how they compare performance vs. price. While you're there, notice how changing CPU's with the same video card does almost nothing for frame rates...

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 20:18

I agree with you on that one. I think he might see SOME improvement, but not much.

To you an idea, I just upgraded my entire system. I went from:
550MHz Intel -> Athlon 2100+
256MB RAM -> 512
and I slapped in a Western Digital 80GB Special Edition drive**.
My performance on GTA3 is still pretty sub-par. I can't run higher than 800x600 with acceptable framerates, so I mainly run the game in 640x480, which isn't all that pretty.

My problem? I have an ATI AIW Radeon (the first one). It's a 32MB card, and the biggest bottleneck in my system.

So yes, upgrade the card first.

And yes, I would also recommend the 4.1 ProMedia's. They are excellent speakers.

**I was so pissed that I didn't know about CompUSA's recent deal. They had 120GB Western Digital SE drives (w/ 8MB buffer) for $50! I would have set up my RAID with a couple of those. damn.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 20:50

Erm. If I knew about CompUSA selling those drives for $50, I would've jumped all over them too. Instead, I spent $90 on a WD non-special edition 60gig a couple weeks ago.
Posted by: Waterman981

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 09/09/2002 21:04

I would agree on the Video card. I had to upgrade mine just to play the game. I went from an older ATI Rage Fury Pro to a GeForce 4 440MX, w/64.... I got the card for under $100. I would also recommend RAM. My buddy has 256 DDR on his system with a Athlon XP1700, while I have 768 SDRAM with a Athlon 1.3GHz. The game takes well over twice as long to load on his computer than mine. We think it is the RAM. So since it is cheap I would look into getting the RAM as well.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 07:30

Thanks guys.

I ordered a geforce4 420MX 64MB card and 512MB ram today from Buy.com.
When they get here Ill pop them in and report back.

One last question though.
What the hell is an AGP slot?
All I know about them is that I dont have one.
Had a pretty tricky time trying to find a high end video card in PCI flavor.
Are they faster? More robust? Shinier?

And here I thought I knew all about PC's being a computer professional.
Boy, take a couple of months off and you get totally out of the loop.
Oh well...

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 07:46

Oh boy. Then you'll have to upgrade the mobo. I'm suprised you have an 850MHz processor on a mobo wiith no AGP slot. Are you sure? look at the mobo and at the PCI slots. if you see four or fiv of them, then above them there's another similar slot but shaped different, you have one.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 07:47

What the hell is an AGP slot? All I know about them is that I dont have one.

Ah, well, then that would explain why the game runs so slow on your system.

AGP is a special card slot just for high-end video cards. All the new video cards use them. In fact, I would suspect that the new GeForce4 you just bought is also an AGP card and if you don't have an AGP slot on your computer, then you can't use it.

I find it surprising that your system doesn't have an AGP slot, though. Are you sure?

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 07:56

The Optiplex GX110 was designed to be a workstation. To save space and money they used a motherboard with a built in Intel AGP video chipset.

I've got a couple motherboards without any AGP slots here as well. They're all mini-ITX boards though.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 08:11

GeForce4 or GeForce4MX?

I've got a GeForce4MX card to put into my Shuttle which only has a single PCI slot. The GeForce4MX is apparently a combination of a GeForce2MX and the memory controller from a GeForce4. Bit of a cheek advertising it as a GeForce4 really

Dis is what I got.
VERTO GEFORCE4 MX420 64MB SDRAM PCI GRAPHICS CARD
I know its not the super-duper top of the line, but Its better than what I have, and it was in the sub-$100 range.

Did I err?

Nah. It should be fine. The GeForce4 MX was the best performing card for the price that was also PCI when I looked.

Yeah, come on folks. What good is checking this BBS daily if people don't post about these CompUSA sales when they hear about them?

Well, for future reference, here's what the guy posted on my board yet I didn't see it in time:

In reply to:

Every now and again, CompUSA does a little deal with Western Digital, where they give you a coupoun for a 100 dollar mail-in rebate when you buy their most expensive drive, the 120 gig 7200 RPM. They also match prices, so when their normal price for the drive is 270 bucks, you can easily find places online that will sell the drive for 150 bucks; just print an ad from that site out, take it in, and they'll match the price. That's a good deal in and of itself, but with the 100 dollar MIR, you end up paying 50 bucks...for a 270 dollar drive. I pulled this off last year in December, and more recently, yesterday. So, now I have 2 120 gig hard drives in my computer.

DUH, of course, silly me. We're mostly a Dell house here where I work and I should have known that. We've got 110s here and I should have realized what he was talking about.

And regarding the PCI GeForce4: I had no idea they still made PCI cards, that's interesting. I dunno about how well it's going to perform, but hey, give it a shot.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 14:35

I have a couple of PCI geForce2 cards (for second monitors) and they seem to work just fine. I used one as my primary card for three days when my AGP card freaked, and while it didn't blow me away, the performance was acceptable. I would imagine the gf4 to be a similar story.

I'm just amazed someone's turning an Optiplex (we call them Craptiplex's here at a mostly-Dell-shop) into a gaming machine. Bravo!
Posted by: tfabris

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 16:10

Doesn't make sense to me that they would design the Optiplex's so that they don't have AGP slots. Seems to me that they could offer an optional "sideways outrigger" card (whatever you call that riser card the Optiplex's have) that had 2 PCI's and an AGP instead of 3 PCI's as it is now.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 17:59

Does seem a little limiting but I guess they're doing a cost reduction exercise on the whole Optiplex line. Since most of the time a workstation in an office will just run Word and Excel, a fast graphics card isn't essential.

I'm not too keen on their new Dimension line of PCs. It's very plasticky feeling for some reason. I like the fact you can open it up and add/remove most of the components without a screwdriver tho...

I was running 3DMark2001 and my Vodoo 3 2000 card was beating out my Radeon 8500 128MB DDR on benchmark scores. Turns out I had to update the "VIA" drivers on my systems ABIT Motherboard. I never would have guessed...

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 10/09/2002 18:24

Yeah, benchmarking programs are great for knowing what to do to get the most out of your machine. Programs like Sandra are even better for more precise tweaking. It's always a good thing to know how your machine performs, and how it should perform. You just never know what trivial thing could increase performance, or stability.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 11/09/2002 13:11

My first gaming machine was a Compaq with a mini form factor, so I can relate. It was 'free' as well (the network admin was getting revenge on the parent company and started giving them away) and it served me well for a year. I know it's a gift horse, but given the hurdles I really am impressed you're making the effort. When you're done upgrading put out the specs -- I'll bet it's the buffest Craptiplex in the world by then.

I finally installed it on my home machine last night (1.3ghz, 384MB Ram, GeForce2 GTS) and wow. This machine chokes every time you get in a plane, and i have all the settings turned WAY down. Crazy. I didn't realize how spoiled i was on my work machine. I'm thinking about going out and getting a new card today just so i can get a good rate on this game. Anyone have any suggestions on a sub $100 card that will rock?? I've been an nVidia guy for a while, but haven't followed the recent updates... so what's the bad ass card to have at the moment?

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 14/09/2002 10:43

Loren, don't get a sub-$100 card for your home gaming machine right now. I don't think Sub-$100 will improve things much beyond that GTS you're running now. Doom3 is coming out soon, and none of the sub-$100 cards are going to run it with all of the features, you're going to have to scale back its settings for most cards.

Even among the more expensive recent GeForce4 cards, even some of those won't run it with all its features. There's one certain GeForce4 chipset that's supposed to be able to run Doom3 well but I don't remember its name. I'm going to wait until Doom3 is about to come out before I buy a new card, so that I can let the prices drop a bit and let the card technology advance a bit. Then I'll buy whatever card Carmack recommends for running Doom3.

I picked up a GeForce 3 Ti200 online for 90 bucks and I am stoked. I run the game at 800 x 600 (32) with all the settings at high and get nice, clean gameplay.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 14/09/2002 14:02

Carmack whore.

I dunno, from what i've seen and read it seems like the GeForce 4's are a big jump from the 2 series. And for under a $100 i'm not that worried if i have to replace it in 3-4 months.

I've got a 3-ti-200 and been playing all day at 1024x768. 32 bit. Everything cranked to high, runs perfectly.

My recommendation though would be a GF4, anything besides the MX variety (which is a glorified GF3 it seems). the ti 4200, 4400, etc. Should last 2 years or so at least, and in the $150 - $200 range, depending what kind of deal you find.

For that, I like www.pricewatch.com , and forums.anandtech.com - go and read the "hot deals" section, stuff pops up quite often there.

JAFO - just another $*$(%)_ opinion.

Sorry, been Lan-festing for about 24 hours straight now, and starting to lose it hopefully that answer makes sense.

K, i'm fairly pissed. I just dropped $150 for a PNY GeFoce4 MX 440 at Frys (i'm impatient), and it's running like ASS. Framerates are all over the place and it chugs pretty often... and i've tried every setting known to man, updated ever possible driver, and nothings helped. I have 384MB Ram and i'm thinking that's not enough... but i surely thought i'd notice a difference from this card and a Geforce2..this one seems worse! I'd bring it back tomorrow... i just don't feel like driving to f'n Sunnyvale. Grrrr!!!!! I've been tweaking all night instead of playing and i'm a very unhappy customer!

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 15/09/2002 06:45

I got a PNY GeFoce4 MX 420 (PCI not AGP) from Buy.com, and its smooth as silk.
And thats with all the settings in the game set to medium (I tried it on high, and I got a little bit of choppiness, so now I'm somewhere in between).
I have 512MB ram and a PIII 866.
Maybe it just seems so smooth in comparison to my old ATI radeon 7000.
I'm pretty happy with it though.
Is the 440 better than the 420?

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 15/09/2002 10:08

Yeah, but like Fusto said, it seems to be working damn good on most people's systems.

Fusto, when you get a sec...
While playing the game, go into the console by pressing "~" key, then type "console.showfps 1". That will show your fps in the upper right hand corner. Let me know what you're getting.

I've got a Dell Dimension 8100, 1.3 ghz p4, 384 megs of ram, a Sound Blaster Live Value, and that GeForce 4 MX 440... should be plenty to run the game smoothly. I have noticed it jolt when it's doing some hard drive reading (swapping i'd imagine).. which makes me wonder if i need some more RAM (stupid RAMBUS). I just don't get it... it's driving me nuts. There's got to be one little thing that's making it choke and i can't figure out what it is. I've turned off all extra processes and background apps, and updated all the drivers like i said. With the exception of the SB LIve! card... when i installed the new drivers, i got no sound whatsoever, so i put the original ones from Dell back in. Any insight into that one anyone?

In the mean time, i found a AOPEN GEFORCE4 TI4200 128MB VIVO at GameVE.com for $154 with free shipping. I'm definitely ordering that sucker and returning this MX.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 15/09/2002 11:39

Somebody else said something about turning down the ``resolution'' of the sound effects, too. Have you tried that? (I'm working blind here, since my CPU is simply not fast enough.)
Posted by: tracerbullet

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 15/09/2002 12:26

Cool - if you can return the MX, then you've done well to upgrade I think. You'll see a lot better fps witht he new one.

I just checked, the single player demo doesn't do anything at all when I hit the "~" key, and the multiplayer we sat on this weekend won't start when I'm alone (just got home from a Lan-fest we did yesterday). So I don't know what my numbers are.

I have video sttings to "high", 1024x768x32 @100, graphics high, effects high, environment mapping on, lightmaps on, shadows on, just noticed 80% only for texture but can't think sure that makes too much difference, and view distance 100%. Sounds are quality 22khz, high detail, hardware accelerated (5.1 Philips soundcard). Using the Nvidia refresh rate fix to lock 100Hz in the game mode for the monitor.

I'm picky about graphics, I easily get motion sickness and take Dramamine to play for long. I can't even have the guy next to me shake his foot while playiing, because I can see my monitor jiggle just that little bit. And I had a very pretty screen all day yesterday. The clouds and smoke, etc. were all very smooth with no sharp edges, everything simply looked great. One of the prettier games around this side of Serious Sam. Athlon 1.4~266, 512 MB RAM, Gainward GF3ti200, with the Philips super duper soundcard.

One of the guys mentioned the game being a memory hog, but not sure what that was based on. The good soundcard should keep the CPU from being hit, but primarily it's all up to the vid card anyway... What do you see in 3dmark2001? Or do you use it? I typically hit 7000, give or take depending if antivirus and other such things are running. I can set the CPU to run at 1.5 all day long and turn the GF3 overclock sliders up to 200 and 450, and hit about 8000 on it. But I typically don't do it, since when I do play games I do it for like 24 hours at a shot and figure overheating and killing something ain't worth it.

I can think of a few variables though - 1) The full version you are playing is a lot more demanding than the demo we were playing, though I doubt it at least a little since they'd want the demo to be outstanding enough for everyone to buy the game. 2) You've got some wierd thing toggled on or off that makes a substantial hit on it all, either in the game or out. V-sync perhaps, or something similar? 3) We simply have different definitions of acceptable, though I know mine are pretty high.

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 15/09/2002 12:49

I get fluctuation between about 40-60 fps.... Athlon 1.3GHz, 768 SDRAM, MSI GeForce 440MX (which I got for $90) 800x600 32bit color, with everything turned all the way up... SB Live! with hardware acc. turned on, at 44 khz. I don't know if this will help.... We do have the same speed processor... but mine is AMD, not Intel

Yeah, something's definitely screwy then if your getting that good. I think i've narrowed it down to my OEM Dell SB Live! Value card... i'm gonna toss another one in and see if that helps. *Crossing fingers*

Im getting about 35-60 fps. It varies depending on mode of transport.
Flying the plane on a full server (32 users) with a bunch of other planes and lots of action brought it down in the twenties for a second or two but that was the worst it got. Have also had it up in the 80's while flying a plane through some action.
Total average? I'd have to say about 45.

Well, I 'm a bit suprised there on the choking, I have a GForce2 GTS card, 512MB RAM, Athlon 1.4Ghz, and had the settings at midway., 800x600x16bit, and I'm not having any problems when I get into a plane. I do know the game is a big RAM hog, so you might want to just go ahead and put more RAM in.

Now I've got a GForce4 Ti4600...Cranked the settings up to full, 1024x768x16(Forgot to set it to 32), and it's still pretty smooth. I'll need to get online tomorrow night.

UT2003 demo under Linux runs nice also with the new card

Im getting about 35-60 fps
What are you guys doing to monitor the fps? Is it a seperate program or is there a function in the game?

Re: PC gaming, how can I make it better? - 16/09/2002 06:41

Loren told me how.

In the game press the ~ key.
That pops up the console.
Then type: console.showfps 1 and hit enter.
That then puts a framerate counter up in the left hand side of the screen.
You'll have to turn off the radio commands (f8) to really see it.
And it doesnt show up when your somewhere dark, because the numbers are black.
Press ~ again to close the console.

Interesting, I could have sworn someone from id dropped a big hint at QuakeCon along the lines of "we don't like to take a game to E3 two years in a row".

This was more of a joke that had the audience laughing, basically aimed at Daikatana and Duke Nukem (taking) Forever. There was no specific talk that Doom 3 would come out before next May, or even a minor hinting. When it's done is the mantra, and right now the engine is done (and has been for months beyond tweaks), and now it's just up to the artists and such to crank out the content.

And yes, on the video card arena, a sub $100 GeForce 4 MX is not going to show much improvement over a GeForce 2 GTS. They are actually the same basic card. (Engineering redid the core to be a bit cheaper to make and Marketing slapped the 4 on the name). The GeForce 4 Ti on the otherhand would be a decent step up from the 2 GTS.

Western Digital SE 120GB Hard Drives again!!!! - 20/09/2002 16:52

After I missed this I subscribed to CompUSA's ads... got an email today which had this link for next week. Does this look like the same thing to you guys. The emails description read: Caviar SE 120GB, 7200RPM, Internal EIDE Hard Drive- $149.99 after savings and rebate. Now isn't the SE the 8MB Buffer??

Yes, that should be the one with the 8MB buffer. Not quite as good as the deal that guy was talking about, but still good.

Re: Western Digital SE 120GB Hard Drives again!!!! - 20/09/2002 22:44

I think this is pretty much the same thing... for $50 he was taking in a internet ad where it was $150. CompUSA would price match it, then slap on top of that the $100 MIR. I never knew CompUSA price matched internet prices. I know Staples does...

Go here for a video card comparison chart. It includes most recent cards except for the newest Radeon 9700 from ATI (which blows away the Ti4600).

In regards to the MicroCenter advertisment for a WD 120GB drive, the ad was a misprint. It had the correct SKU# but listed the cache as being "8MB" when it should have said "2MB". Although this was immediately recognized, many people used (unscrupulously) the printed ad to receive price matches at various local stores before the stores found out that it was a misprint. Believe me, I was having dreams of a 360GB RAID monster setup for about $100
