Motherboard Problems (Again?)

Motherboard Problems (Again?) - 31/12/2002 18:12

Yes, it never ends. I received my Asus A7N8X. I simply removed the old motherboard and put in the new one. Now, when I boot up, I get the B&W Win2K screen and that's fine, then I get the normal Win2K startup screen and the starting up bar gets half way before I get a BSOD. It's one of those "*** STOP" messages, and gives me: "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE." What is the cause of this?

Other than that, the installation went well. I hoped nothing like this would happen, but oh well.

Transporting a Windows OS between motherboards is tricky. This site has several methods you can choose to try and move the install to new hardware. Usually the key thing is to uninstall chipset specific drivers for the IDE controller before changing the hardware. The error you are getting means 2000 loaded it's storage driver, and can't see the hard drives. Most likely your motherboards use different IDE controllers, but the generic 2000 driver should support both.

I'm not opposed to reinstalling the OS, but I have a few worries. When I reinstall, will items in my personal documents and settings folder be deleted? Like, if I have stuff on my desktop, will it delete it? I don't care about programs, but I don't want to loose any data files.

i generally do the bottom with windows 2000/xp on the very bottom in the misc notes. just pop a cd, act like your going to install, and when it tells you it finds a previous os, repair it. it will go thru the motions and replace all files, but it will rebuild the system registry hive and redetect all drivers.

Transporting a Windows OS between motherboards is tricky.

I'm running the same install of Win98 that I've managed to keep through three different motherboards. No problems, it's been reasonably stable this whole time.

I have to reload chipset drivers each time I do it, but otherwise it cranks right along. Guess I've been lucky.

I think it's different with Win2K. But oh well. Thanks everyone, I just reinstalled Win2K and now I'm running GREAT! This machine is screaming fast now, everything's stable, and I'm even running GTA3 at very high resolutions with absolutely no stutters or slowness.

Thanks people!
