.jpg question - 18/03/2003 08:34

I recently installed a picture viewer program called JPEGGER and wanted to uninstall it. However, it wasn't listed in the uninstall menu. So I just deleted the program and now all my.jpg files won't open. I tried assoicating it with a different program, but I want it like it originally was.. however, I don't know exactly what program it was (I thought it was Internet Explorer, but that doesn't seem to work.)What is the usual default program used to open JPGs in Win2000?I know this is a dumb question.......

My computer opens it up in "Microsoft Photo Editor."

If you want to change which application opens the .jpg and .jpeg file extensions, then try the following:

Open up the file explorer and go to Tools>Folder Options...
Select the File Types tab and scroll down to the .jpg file extension
Select the file extension then click on the Advanced button
A window should popup with different actions for that file type listed. We're concerned with the "Open" action.
Select the Open action and click the Edit button.
Yet another window will pop up with a filed labeled "Application used to perform action" wich should include the complete path to the application you want to open the file type plus a %1 at the end. Here is an example of what it says on my XP machine:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE" "%1"

The %1 is very important. So, change that path to the path of the default photo viewer for your system and it should work.

It is not an editor, but a viewer. It is just Internet Explorer for .jpg and Paint for .bmp

If you're looking for a very small (.exe is only about 400kb), very fast, very free (well non commercial) image viewer I highly recommend Irfanview....

http://www.irfanview.com

And I think I can confidently say that it is only program I regularly use that has never ever crashed or stuffed up.

Ditto on irfanview. I use that program every single time I put a number of photos on a web site. Its batch conversion tool is fantastic!
