USB 2.0 problems - 01/05/2003 16:54
I've been having some problems with a NEC USB 2.0 card I recently purchased. I have two things hooked up to it. One is a Dazzle DVC-150 which uses 2.0 and a scanner which is only USB 1.1 Whenever I shut off the computer, then start it...it "loses" the driver for the DVC. I figure the 2.0 card needs an update, but I can't find one....any ideas?

Don't forget to check:
- Your motherboard manufacturer for flash BIOS updates.
- Your motherboard manufacturer for Windows device driver updates.
- The card manufacturer for the card driver (you said you already did this).
- The scanner and Dazzle manufacturers for driver updates.
Any of the above can be the failure point for USB problems.

the strange thing is that when I hit "restart", it still can find the Dazzle DVC. However, when I "shut down" the computer and then start it up again that is when it can't find the Dazzle

update....i re-installed Windows 2000 to fix another problem i was having, and I didn't start having the USB 2.0 problem again until now. I think it is from a update to Windows2000. It seems to be update #816093: Security Update:MS Virtual Machine. Has anyone else had a problem with that?

Does anyone know how tell how fast the USB 2.0 connection is? I want to make sure that when it does actually work, it is going at 2.0 speed and not 1.1.

the number 480 mbps comes to mind, but I couldn't say for sure. It might only be 400...I get it confused with IEEE 1394

Meatballman is right : it's 480mbps. Although firewire is STILL faster with it's 400mbps, but that's a different story alltogether.

but how can I test how fast this particular USB port is going?I want to make sure that it is going as fast as a typical 2.0 port and not a 1.1 port.

Transfer a gig of mp3s. You'll see a clear difference 12mbps vs. 480mbps is readily apparent.

that's the thing.. it isn't a hard drive I have hooked up. it is a video capture device (that converts video into mp2 through it.) so, i need to actually measure how much is going through the USB 2.0 port. I'm not exactly sure on how to do that, though.
