I saw a score of 57%... really worrisome

Re: Geek Test... - 30/06/2003 15:23

20.3% - phew! My complete lack of interest in Star Trek, Terry Pratchet novels etc. Games Workshop and those card games severely punished my score.

In fact I should be automatically disqualified for making those statements...

33%, Total Geek. The scary part is that I am not and have never been a gamer so that alone disqualifies me from like half of the questions.

Re: Geek Test... - 30/06/2003 21:35

Oh crap. 61.14398% - Extreme Geek. There seem to be an inordinate amount of questions to "geeky" passtimes. Yes, I played D&D. A lot. Yes I play(ed) computer games. A lot. And yes I love my math and science and books. So sue me. At least I can still function reasonably well in a society that doesn't exactly hold certain things with the same high regard as I do.

There were questions that I had to answer affirmatively to, through no fault of my own. For example, I have been in a science competition due to the fact that in my high school, everyone had to enter the science fair in grade 9 and 10, and it's not my fault I went to a school where only 5 people in my grade were bright enough to make the honour roll, so it's not like there was much competition for winning the thing. Or some of the book questions -- I inherited some of those authors (Clarke, and Asimov) due to a friend moving, and he would have tossed them otherwise. But then, there were also things that I didn't check off due to a technicality, such as "I like to turn on my computer first thing in the morning." I never actually turn it off. Any of them. And I like to look at the uptime. There was a power outage at my apartment roughly 98 days and 8 hours ago. And, thanks to Lasik, I don't wear glasses any more -- I used to, and I did fix them myself, but even I had a difficult time spotting the repairs when I was done.

Oh, well. At least now when someone calls me a geek, I can tell them exactly what percentage geek I am.

I think that line just bumped me up a few points. *sigh*

I (as should the rest of you) checked the extra credit boxes at the end of the test for having a car stereo that runs on Linux. I think if you have a WAP in your car you should check all the extra credit boxes ;-)

Thanks!

car stereo that runs on Linux

Wait. It runs Linux?

Seriously, I didn't consider that this increases my geekiness, since all I actually use it for is playing music.

Where I really got hit, I think, was that I have far too many computers.

Re: Geek Test... - 01/07/2003 07:04

there were also things that I didn't check off due to a technicality, such as "I like to turn on my computer first thing in the morning." I never actually turn it off.
I have the same technicality, but since I check my email first thing when I wake up, I checked the box anyway.

I think the one where I could have scored more points was the “programming my calculator” question. Not only did I program my calculator in High School, but I wrote a menuing system for all my programs. The funny thing was that we weren’t allowed to use graphing calculators in math classes because people would write formulas as “programs” (not that they’d write programs to figure out the answers, only that they’d store the written formulas in memory). I, however, wrote programs to figure out all the answers for me using the formulas. I showd it to my teacher and asked if I could use it on tests since clearly I understood the formulas and the theory behind them if I could code the calculator to do the work for me. Surprisingly, she let me! I’m still amazed that she let me get away with it, though I did take her very cute daughter to see Phantom of the Opera (don’t say anything Bitt!), so maybe she was a tad more understanding than she should have been. The truth is, I really did know the formulas better than anyone else in the class. So I think that should have at least counted double for geekiness (though perhaps taking the teachers daughter out would count against geekinees).

I didn’t, however, check the one for “has a hard drive dedicated to mp3’s”, though I considered checking it because of the Empeg. I figured there would be an mp3 player question somewhere but it never came up.

Re: Geek Test... - 01/07/2003 07:17

Greetings!

Well, hard drive dedicated to MP3's is certainly the empeg. Even if you don't have them mirrored on the PC, I cannot think of a more "dedicated hard drive". Also, I hope you counted each empeg as a computer, especially if you have / hack the developer edition.

Gamer, programmer, ex-SCA member, and sci-fi nut. My geek fate was pretty much sealed. I checked pretty solidly throughout, but I cleaned out the "I Have Read" section, everything except Lovecraft and Russian Lit.

And how many answered yes to " I want to score well on this test"? :-)

Re: Geek Test... - 08/07/2003 06:10

This is just a personal distinction, however it would seem to catch the feelings of the quiz. Braces are dapper pieces of men's fashion that button inside of a man's pants therefore allowing the pants to hang correctly as opposed to being cinched into place. Suspenders have big alligator clips that destroy you pants. Suspenders are geeky... braces are not.
