New Music Composition Software from Apple - 16/07/2003 09:32

Apple has decided to launch Soundtrack as a stand-alone app. Previously, I believe, it was integrated into Final Cut Pro 4. It looks pretty cool and it seems to integrate some of the effects capabilities of Logic.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call that composition software. You don't seem to actually be writing the music. Isn't something like this usually called a sequencer?

*edit*
on second thought, I guess I have a different definition of "composition". The program looks pretty nice, though.

Well, the artist hopefully writes the music, not the software. But I would consider this software a tool that would allow one to create a compisition of music. The actual creation of the elements that comprise that compisition is another story, but then that's one reason why not everyone is a musician, right?

This is true, and it looks like a great tool for people to put various elements together in order to make background music, but I would still call it a sequencer.

I guess I'm not blurring the lines as enough between composing music and writing music.

Sorry No worries

I'd still be interested in trying that out, if it weren't for Apple products. It appears to work the same way Cool Edit Pro does, and even more importantly, like Premiere does, in laying out the tracks. That's a great way of piecing stuff together. Honestly, I wish I had something that did that, as my friends and I are starting to shoot a lot of stuff in digital video.

Along the lines that I was talking about, what would be really cool would be to have better MIDI libraries, so that you could use this in conjunction with some sort of score writing software like Finale. Then you'd have some really good soundtracks
