Wireless S/pdif, can it be done?

Wireless S/pdif, can it be done? - 20/07/2003 13:33

Does anyone know of a way to send S/pdif wirelessly? I want to move my HTPC to the other side of the room from my entertainment system but I really don't want to go to the trouble of fishing the wires through the walls and installing the wall plates and all that stuff to hook the digital output of the HTPC back up to the digital input of the receiver. Is there a product sold in the US that will do this for me? I read something about using a wireless system designed for video transmission. What do you guys think?

I've not tried it personally but I know somebody that has done it with those X10 Wireless Video senders. He used the video channel as it's 75 ohms and it actually did work pretty well. It got very noisy if there was any interference though.

YMMV

Buy a video sender, there should be enough bandwidth to send sp-dif over it. Broadcast Warehouse sell a transmitter kit for sending sp-dif over the air which is basically a video sender without the casing...

In my place, if we're watching something that's being sent over one of those things, we can't use the microwave

Your video sender is a lot more robust than the ones I've seen then! My wireless LAN gear disrupts reception on those things quite badly.

I was actually thinking that Tony would probably beat me to it!

Damnit! Sorry, I have to edit my post for the real meaning I meant to convey. This day is not going well...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into a Video sender. I am using a wireless lan on the same system. It sounds like that might present a problem. I also have a set of sennheiser wireless headphones. They seem to work fine. They transmit at 900 mhz while the lan is at 2.4 ghz. I would imagine that the frequency seperation is the reason why they play well together.

You can always change the channel on either system to see if that works.

You could steer the LAN to the top of the band and the video sender to the bottom, or vice versa.
