Empeg Travel Bug - 25/08/2003 07:27

After the Amersfoort meet, mlord introduced me to geocaching. If you haven't tried it, give geocaching.com a look.

I'm heading back to Paris today but thought I'd drop this off first. God speed

Cool, it should only take a year or two.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 26/08/2003 02:59

Thanks guys. It's a one off that I made but I heard Nath(Rob S's son) may be doing something similar. If your looking for one, he's your best bet...

Thanks! I'm hoping it makes it somewhere near the September meet on its trek west.

3 years and 6000 miles later, the bug is nearing its destination in California. Given its progress to date, Cambridge could take a little time.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 03/04/2006 15:18

Nath is still making these occasionally to special order, so if you'd like one I could possibly get it organised. He does matching mini-remotes as well (about 4mm square).

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 03/04/2006 16:00

I would be very interested in a few!!!

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 03/04/2006 18:35

OK - can you say how many, and what colour lenses you want? He does this for pocket money and does them quite quickly as long as you spec what you want.

He can also do empeg bags and Mk 1s as well.
Posted by: furtive

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 04/04/2006 10:47

Rob - I'll take one with a blue lens.

How much is pocket money these days?
Posted by: SE_Sport_Driver

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 04/04/2006 12:42

I'll take one with either a smoke or a blue lens (whichever is easier for him)!

That is so cool!
Posted by: schofiel

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 05/04/2006 07:21

I've been surprised at the interest in this - OK, he's charging E5 per model with a mini remote control included. There is postage on top of that, but it'll probably be about E1.50 or so.

Stop CO2 Emissions Now! - calculate your waste!

Cute little calculator. It tells me that I am much "greener" than the average American (less than half the average) but it does not take into account that living in Alaska, my consumption of heating oil is about double my consumption of gasoline. If I factored that into the equation...

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 05/04/2006 14:33

It is an interesting calculator. And I like that it even has the green energy generation variations. That is still a lot of CO2, though...

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 05/04/2006 19:30

Interesting. It says electric heating is strictly the worst, without regard for what heating technology is used (here in Virginia where it never gets extremely cold, heat pumps -- which are far more efficient than gas or oil heat -- are very common).

edit: Oh, wait it does take heat pumps into account, just later.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 05/04/2006 20:16

It says electric heating is strictly the worst,

That's because most electricity is generated by coal-burning power plants, which are probably second only to volcanos in CO2 emissions.

I always laugh at people who think that electric cars will give rise to cleaner air.

It does centralize the problem. Electric power plants exists to provide power for our things. And the car is one of those rare exceptions to the rule of having a centralized output location for CO2. Switch to electric, and the problem moves from being mobile to being centered at the power plant with everything else. It won't fix the problem now, but it allows the problem to be fixed along with the rest of our electric using devices if a power plant is replaced by a cleaner solution.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 05/04/2006 20:43

Also, power plants are more efficient at extracting energy from their fuel than cars are at extracting energy from theirs. (Of course, you may lose a lot of that efficiency once an electric car gets to use the electricity.) Also, while alternatively-powered power plants (hydroelectric, wind farms, etc.) may account for a minuscule portion of the country's power production, it's still an infinitely bigger portion than that used by a car. And, regardless of their other noxious outputs, nuclear power plants do not produce air pollution.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 05/04/2006 22:33

I want an electric car just for the simplicity. They could just put a motor on each corner and eliminate most of the mechanical components of a car.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 07:12

If, Instead of digging a channel tunnel, we had put a dam across with a motorway and railway on top, the tidal surge would provide enough electricity for the whole of Europe, without CO2 emissions ( if's not one of mine, it's an article that I read abour 30 years ago by a Frenchman whose name I've forgotten).

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 10:06

Ohh - how depressing. I score really well on having a very green house, but then I lose a lot with 20000 miles a year in a performance car, and 25-30 flights a year.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 10:09

Rob - I'd love 2 blue ones if that is doable.

Price seems reasonable.

Cheers

I thought it was far sighted, visionary civil/electrical mega-engineering: Much too much for a mere politician to take in!

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 12:38

Yeah, very reasonable! He can keep the remote though, or give it to someone else, the empeg itself is cool enough for me!

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 13:27

I'll take 1x Mk1 Amber, with kenwood remote

The thing that always worries me about tidal power is the environmental impact, it could be absolutely huge, and it'll affect ecosystems that we know bugger all about.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 15:00

I'm totally in for one of these with a smoke lens, or blue or green if smoke isn't one of the choices.
Posted by: ricin

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 06/04/2006 15:24

I'll take two, one smoke and one blue.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 07/04/2006 01:56

Wait a minute, what is THAT? That's the coolest thing I've seen since... since I took my empeg out of my dash.

What is this keychain made of? Will it hold up from every-day tossing about? I've been looking for a keychain since... geez, 2001.

Put me down for three, starting with one stock blue. Question is, can he do "lit buttons"?! Haha, I'd love one with a green lens with green buttons/knob and one with amber lens with amber buttons/knob. That would make my millennium! PM me for payment and shipping requirements.

Mach: That geocache travel bug site is great! It's hysterical how people move the thing around, taking it home for their husband, make it join a "tour group", and call it by name. How cute!

The one I bougt a couple years ago was made of wax and didn't last more than a day of being in my pocket. It got squished.

I'm not dissing the thing. It has an incredible amount of detail for something so small and is truly amazing. Rob's kid is definitely talented. Just don't leave it in your pocket.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 07/04/2006 16:51

Well, you forgot - you were supposed to COOK it in the oven to make it go hard!!!

The ones I am going to get him to make (now got 5 people ordering) will be hardened.
Posted by: Mach

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 07/04/2006 20:39

Those were the wax ones. I've still got mine somewhere.

The one above and Nath's are made from Sculpey/Fimo IIRC (gets baked in the oven).

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 08/04/2006 00:07

I wonder if they could be further plastic coated to make them super durable; resisting cracking, chipping, shattering, etc. Any way to dip these in some liquid plastic which would dry evenly and clear? I want these to be my keychain for as long as I own my empegs.

This little bug crossed my mind again today. How can we get him on a plane to Cambridge in September? At least get him into the hands of one of the American attendees. Or is that cheating?

I wouldn't say it's cheating, but the bug should have a goal, like around the world maybe?

It does: "Current GOAL: I am an Empeg MP3 player. I would like to go to San Francisco and then back to my creators in Cambridge, England."

Maybe we should make sure it gets back while there are still some of those creators left? Then we can make up another goal for it, like follow Hugo to Apple, the wrong way round or something?

If it helps, I will be in San Francisco the weekend of July 22nd. I won't be able to go on a hunt for it, but I could take it with me to Cambridge.

Re: Empeg Travel Bug - 26/05/2006 22:31

It is down near LA right now, so if someone can get it here then Rob can get it over yonder.

Elaine and I will probably be traveling all over the California coast (LA to Russian River, or more probably, other way around) in July, and will of course be in Cambridge as well...
