surplus stuff of interest in CA - 30/09/2003 14:45

Hi.

On our inspection tour of the west coast, I'd like to look around at any interesting purveyors of surplus test equipment in the SF/LA area, assuming that:

A) they exist, and

B) someone can point me at them.

So, can anyone help with points A and B?

C and H Sales sells lots of older stuff. Also lots high voltage and general electrical surplus. Definitely worth checking out.

http://www.weirdstuff.com/ has lots of stuff. Really cool place in Silicon Valley. I wanna go with you guys!

http://urbanore.citysearch.com/ has lots of old donated stuff... they had some oscilliscopes and such last time i was there, but i would imagine it's pretty hit or miss if any of it actually works.

Too bad you aren't going to Chicago:

Suhweet. Weirdstuff had that Pentium Pro 200 I'd been wanting to fill a 2nd cpu socket in my old Compaq Proliant 800! Besides, who could pass it up at $14.95?

Too cool. Thanks Loren!

Reminds me, I have a dual ppro 200 with 2 cpus with matched stepping, and the damn thing won't recognize both. Either, but not both. I wonder if it's worth my time to debug.

I am sorely tempted to blow off half a day's work to come down and go to weirdstuff with you guys. You're talking Monday before the BBQ, right?

Yes, today, nowish in fact. I'm currently sitting in a rental car with the AC on, checking routes with microsoft streetfinder, outside the Embassy Suites hotel where we're staying. I've just hit a large model shop, and I'm aiming at Fry's again (went there yesterday, want more stuff ). Rob is in LA for a DNNA meeting, but he'll be back at 3PM. If you want to hook up, call me on +44 7968 693575, which is my roaming mobile.

We want a FULL report please, including dark, hazy camera phone photos of weird (perhaps scary) equipment!

Don't have time to do a full report, but it's a neat place.

Essentially a big warehouse full of a bunch of weird electronic junk. Tons of stuff clearly salvaged from bubble-bursted-dotcoms. Gobs of used stuff at ludicrously low prices. Patrick bought a bunch of odds and ends, I even got about five bucks worth of stuff, including a couple of super-tiny low-profile 5v fans that I think would work well as empeg-lid fans. Gonna try them out and see if they're low-profile enough to allow lid removal without having to loosen the display board.
