Big F1 problem!

Big F1 problem! - 09/10/2003 17:49

The problem is that the Embassy Suites does not have the Speed channel. This means I will be unable to watch the Japanese GP on Sunday (well, Saturday evening here I guess) - the final GP of the season, and the championship decider!

Argh!!

Any suggestions of venues in the bay area that would be likely to show the GP would be much appreciated. There must be a motor racing sports bar somewhere!

Thanks

Rob

Surely some friendly geek here will let you come to their place and watch?

People are more into NASCAR on this side of the pond, pity.

Rob,
Wish I could help you... I will be recording it myself as I will be at VIR in Virginia watching a vintage car race... A bunch of morgans, fiats and Datsuns as well as vintage F/atl, F/1, F/2, F5000, Indy, Formula V, and Can-Am cars... Full list of cars here

The Chieftain claims they show "World Sports" on their "Crystal clear Massive Screen (5ft x 4ft) and multiple T.V's." Maybe give them a ring and see if they'll be tuning it in...

I bet what they lack in F1 coverage they make up for with a bizarre lobby area...

Woo Hoo!!!! The Blues are from my home town, Pensacola. Incredible show. Did you see it?

Re: Big F1 problem! - 10/10/2003 10:15

My grandfather has a house on the beach on Gulf Breeze. I spent many weeks every summer of my youth on that beautiful white beach watching the Blue Angels buzz the water practicing for shows elsewhere. The beach house had a few autographed Blue Angel photos to my grandfather. They've never ceased to cause my jaw to drop, no matter how many times i've seen them. Especially when they are buzzing SF! The show is this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon, i'll either be on my roof or at the Wharf watching them. =]

Where do you live in Pensacola?

Re: Big F1 problem! - 10/10/2003 10:38

I did live in Pensacola proper. Now my parents live in Cantonment (suburb of P'cola) and I live in New Orleans. We still have the beach house on Santa Rosa Island, though.

My favorite maneuver is the from behind sneak pass. Gets me every time, even though I'm expecting it. BTW, I have a signed blues poster in my house here, too.

I wonder if they're the maniacs that flew under the golden gate bridge at the exact moment my 777 flew over it (at 7000 feet of course).

Well, rumor has it that those darned Canadians are in town too, but it doesn't seem like they've been out having as much fun as the Blue Angels.

I DO believe that's part of the SF show. When they fly in formation, they get as close as one foot from each other. Insane.

Re: Big F1 problem! - 11/10/2003 07:48

I hop on the board and everyones talking about where I live.....imagin that.....

OK, so I'm just over here for school, my "home" is 2 hours east in Panama City. But since I've been here it has quickly become home to me.

Didn't realize there were other empegers near by. So when do we get to have a South East meet?

Bit late now, but we were at the thirsty bear (I think) last night. Probably going to watch the blue angels from the roof of some new friends we met, and I'm thinking of going to the DNA lounge tonight where Wizzy Noise are doing a PA.

Should at least be at the BBQ on Monday even though Rio are now trying to send me to a meeting in LA on the first day of my vacatiion

Re: Big F1 problem! - 11/10/2003 09:55

I wish we would have a SE meet. Unfortunately, there are precious few of us, apparently. Believe it or not, I never had an excuse to make it to Panama City. I used to work occasionally in Fort Walton Beach when I worked for Gulf Power.

Re: Big F1 problem! - 11/10/2003 09:59

Rob, If you're going to watch the blues, don't forget to wear sunblock and especially chapstick with sunblock. A couple hours staring into the sky is more than most faces are used to.

Re: Big F1 problem! - 11/10/2003 17:01

Well, let me tell you what your missing in Panama City......there is sand, there is water, the two meet in a configuration probably similer to what you have seen before. The sands pretty white, the water is pretty blue......that is when it isnt choked with seaweed. In short, its just like any other beach on the gulf coast.

Ok, so 8 years of living here and putting up with the tourists and the #*&( spring breakers has made me cynical.

Oh, another thing........the whole county is as flat as a board and the city is layed out in a grid.........very boring. Makes Pensacola seem downright mountianous.

On a positive note, despite it's size it retains much of a small town feel and most of the people are pretty nice.

So how many is a few anyway? I wouldnt mind driving a few hours even if it was just 15-20 people. Besides, gives me more time to spend with my Empeg.

Nah, it's Monday I've now lost to a meeting in LA I get back to SJC at 3pm so there should be no problem getting the BBQ in Berkeley.

Glad to hear you'll sill be making it. I should hope the drive from san jose won't take three hours.

Back to the other tangent in this thread. I managed to catch the Blue Angels at the embarcadero today, and they were great. I was the guy with the 400mm lense attached to the camera trying not to whack the people in front of me with it. I've been to airshows before, but it was a compleetly new and sureal feeling to be driving over the Bay Bridge and watching a bomber make a low speed pass right over the bridge.

I think more like 3-4. At least, that's all that have mentioned being from around here.

Definitly an incredible sight. I see similar ones, being that my office is about 2 miles south of the Air Force Academy. It's entertaining to watch the planes practice, and based on the complexity of the flight, easy to tell how long the pilot has been there.
