Mpeg2 to AVI?

I can't for the life of me find a program that will convert Mpeg2 files to any other format. I'd like to convert to avi so I can do some editing in Premiere, then possibly save it as an even smaller divx file.

Doom9 has an old guide on how to rip Mpeg2 files off DVDs and convert them to AVI, but I don't think it'll work on files (like the ones I get from Tivo).

Virtualdub is the program you are looking for. i've only used it a few times. It does the trick, but i'm not exactly sure of all its functionality. haven't gotten around to exploring its documentation or forums yet.
