I've never had any problems with any of my Caviar drives.

Yeah kinda hot, but the BB series only has 2mb cache and 1yr warranty vice the JB (special edition) with 8mb cache and (in most cases) 3 yr warranty.

Also, I'm getting some kind of ASP error when I try to add it to my cart.

Thinking of new goodies...

Sitting on my back porch awaiting my return home are:

BOXD865PERLK Intel 865 mobo w/integrated Gbit
CPU P4/2.8CGHz 800M 478P/512K HT
(2) 512MB 2.5V 184PIN DDR

While not a top-o-the line screamer, it'll be a big step up from my PIII 800/756MB 100Mhz FSB Via system. Huzzah. OS reinstall here I come.

Wish me luck.

I gotta say, if you only want to spend $100 for a hard drive then that's a good deal. Otherwise you can get the 250GB SATA drive for $300. 8MB cache, 3 year warranty, much better drive all around. I sure love mine! Thanks to bittorrent I've added about 20GB to it in the past couple weeks!

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 14:03

3x the price for 1.5x the space is a better deal?

Yeah, I see what you mean. It's better to get more space in a single drive, but I plan to put this mofo in an external case to keep a backup of my FLACs on. Oh yeah, go though Fatcash and get another 2% off.

EDITED for bad math

Guess you ordered already? I'm getting:

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a0009'

Subscript out of range: '[number: 0]'

/basket/additem.asp, line 365

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 14:14

yeah, order placed. I was getting an error in IE that my account didn't exist. Knowing that wasn't true, I used Firebird to place the order. It went through.

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 14:15

Yeah, I know, the value isn't there But there's other issues including the fact that the drive is just newer, therefore probably performs better and runs quieter. Quieter is better for me as more drives get added to my case. I'm not a huge noise freak, but the whine will get to me after a while

Oh, and about Bittorrent, are you sure you've got everything going right? I mean, I've been having no problems recently whatsoever. What are you using?

All I know is that P2P sucks these days, and Bittorrent is approximately 2000 times better for me, or more If you don't download a lot of music, and don't mind only taking what's given to you, bittorrent is fantastic.

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 14:18

ive used three different bittorrent clients to try to finish this off.
i usually dont have such problems with it. bittorrent is great, so long as you dont mind having your ul stream completely saturated.

Torrent client that lets you set UL caps so your upstream isn't saturated.

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 14:51

I'm using Shadow's client. As far as I've seen the trick (for me, at least) is to only download one thing at once. For me, if I have two clients open, I get much less than half the dl speed. Also, with one client open, browsing the internet is no different. With two, it's unusable.

So, with one client open and my router's ports configured properly, I regularly get very high speeds. On average, I'd say I download at around 40KB/s. Yes, KB. I regularly see 60KB/s, and the last torrent I had open was going at 85-90KB/s for a whole evening.

Are you getting the same kinds of speeds?

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 15:13

I'm on a cable modem with 3mb downstream bandwidth. When it's not bottlenecked on my cable provider's headend, I can get two or three torrents going at 80 KB/s each using PTC. As long as I am judicious with my upstream (allocating 5 k/s upstream to each, for instance, so my 256kb upstream doesn't get maxed out) I can do that and still browse the web with half-decent speeds.

Re: WD 160GB Hard Drive $99 - 08/01/2004 15:17

yeah, ive got that one. i dont care so much about the ul saturation as i do the 4 day hash checking.

i cant reach those speeds here. the only isp i can have provides 512mb dsl. i rarely get above 33kB downloads.

Noise is easy to deal with, just put it in the attic I've got eight 120GB drives whirring away up there at the moment, but the case has space for eight more. I may run out of PCI slots for the drive controller cards first, though. I did upgrade the PSU to a 550W one in advance of adding more drives, but haven't got around to the actual adding bit yet.
