Journalists and spelling - 04/02/2004 12:59

Right now, the top story headline on Google News is Kerry shows strength in bellwhether Missouri. Now, first of all, your college journalism professor would probably tell you that the news reader is uninterested in you showing off your vocabulary, and, thus, that next-to-last word is probably unwarranted.

But he'd definitely tell you that if you thought you had to use such hifalutin' words, especially in a headline, that you'd better make sure you spell it properly.

For God's sake. Does no one know how to use a dictionary any more? And you know that the newspaper probably has a copy or two. On each person's desk.
