PCI Express 1920x1200 DVI Recommendations

I need a video card (PCI Express) that will support 1920x1200 resolutions using DVI. I have a NVidia GeForce 5700 but it will only support that resolution through the VGA out. It would be nice if the new card could simulaneously support a VGA 17" monitor at 1280x1024 although I could install a second card for that. Any suggestions?

These all appear to get well above that resolution. I just searched for ones with DVI and 128MB of RAM.

Thanks. the thing that suprised me was that the one I have supports the higher resolutions only with the VGA output.

1920x1200 requires dual link DVI thats why.

I guess I am confused. if that is so, why is there only on DVI on this monitor? Plus no mention of that requirement either in the literature or documentation?

Dual link DVI is still only one plug. Single link just uses half the pins in the DVI plug whilst dual link uses all the rest as well. I guess they assume that you'd know or would check the video card.

Learn something new each day. I even called tech support at Samsung and they never mentioned it. Still struggling with this and will research some more. The dvi cable they sent with the monitor is like this instead of like this. I assume I will need the latter. Now I wonder if my video card (which is pinned like the latter) will work if I just put the dual cable in.

Dunno. The standard specifies that it's a max of 1920x1080@60Hz when using single link DVI. They've either revised the standard at some point (not seen any announcements however) or it's not actually in spec.

Well it sure doesn't work so either the video card doesn't support dual DVI or the cable doesn't give it the bandwidth required. Must ... have ...more.. information. Seem like someone on this board works for ATI. Surely the X800 would work.

The online manual for that monitor suggests that correct sync polarity may be required to avoid a blank screen at max res.. something to check, I suppose.

Well that didn't work (using PowerStrip). I think this is a video card limitation.

You can reduce the vertical blanking interval when using a single-link TMDS transmitter to support 1920x1200. All our Mac cards support this resolution on Apple's panels for instance (down to our lowest 7000). In fact, our PC/Windows cards also support this once you've booted the OS. Been this way for years. YMMV with different displays. And generally, I don't believe many (most?) 1920x1200 panels even support Dual Link. Hence shipping the standard single-link DVI-D cable.

Our new Mac X800XT, as well as FireGL X3 cards support Dual Link - this allows you to connect Apple's 30" 2560x1600 display (and others' high resolution DL-DVI displays).

I appreciate the input on the ATI cards. On the ATI cards, how do you reduce the vertical blanking interval.

I had thought about the 30" Apple Display before I bought the Samsung. Honestly though the 1920x1200 was big enough for what we need it for. I also heard that a lot of the controls on the apple displays are through software only with no support through PCs.

The only hardware controls on the Apple Cinema Display I have here are power and brightness.

However, when connected via DVI the only piture settings my nice new Dell 20" TFT has is brightness and zoom. You don't need sizing controls and colour/contrast etc can be set via the graphics card.

Check the attachment to see where it is set. Though make sure to use the drivers with the normal control panel. Last I knew the CCC didn't expose these options yet.

This is normal for any DVI display. My Samsung gere gives me brightness controls and menu repositioning options only when running in DVI. The rest has to be controlled by the source. An Apple display on the PC will be the same as any other LCD on a PC.
