Cool task switch in windows XP?

Cool task switch in windows XP? - 20/01/2005 16:11

I've got two users in my department who are running Windows XP.

One user, when he presses alt-tab, gets the same kind of task switch screen that you get in Windows 2000. The icons for the applications, with truncated versions of the window names.

The second user, when he presses alt-tab, gets a mac-esqe screen showing miniaturized pictorial versions of each application's window. Very useful if you have a lot of windows open with similar window names. You can tell instantly, visually, which one is which, without having to parse the truncated window name.

User one covets user two's feature. User two doesn't recall having to do anything special to make this happen. Does anyone know how this gets enabled?

Hmm. I turned that on for a while once. It was very slow and the images of the windows were so artifacted that it was useless.

I seem to remember that it might be in TweakUI somewhere. I certainly don't remember trying very hard to activate it or turn it off. I'll look for it when I get home.

Actually, I think it's one of the other PowerToys now that I think about it for a second. Yup. Alt-Tab Replacement/TaskSwitch.

This is the alt-tab replacement utitlity from Windows Xp's Powertoys, which you can find here.
This is only one of the powertoys... I like TweakUI the best myself eg.

Edit : too slow...

Aha, that must have been what happened to user two. His computer has a third-party video card, whereas user one has built-in motherboard video.

Thanks everyone for the link to the power toy.

The Powertoy everyone linked to is one of the programs. I however use WinPlosion as this is way more like OS X application switching.

Winplosion was odd for me... I've tried other Expose-type apps and every one has felt klugy aside from that one, but I still didn't keep it installed.

It's so hard to make Windows usable like X... at least the virtual desktop toolbar addon lets you disable the view animation so you can switch quick(er)

any value you get from seeing thumbnails of windows is negated by the slow drawing.. a day late and a dollar short

What I want is a virtual desktop plugin that does thumbnails like Enlightenment did back in the day. that was convenient

Just tried it, as not having Expose on my Windows machines annoys me. And it looks like I will still be annoyed even after trying WinPlosion. Sadly it seems none of these people who make these programs ever actually used Expose on the Mac, and are just trying to sucker windows people into spending money. Expose on the Mac is well thought out to how it places windows, how it acts based on if you tapped or held the button, and just feels right. This program got the boot after 5 minutes.
