quick stupid power supply question

quick stupid power supply question - 15/02/2005 23:10

I'm looking for an adequate replacement for an AC power supply rated at 5V 1.6A.

Rat Shack carries both a 6v 1800mA adapter and a 4.5V 1600mA adapter.

Which should I buy as a replacement? And does anyone know where in the US to get one of these cheaper? $22?! Jeebus.

Um, yeah, I'd avoid ratshack and find an online place like Jameco or All Electronics. You'll find better, less expensive, and more directly suited to your spec.

I've looked other places, and unfortunately, those linked above are the closest to spec I could find. I checked Jameco and All Electronics, as well as a few shops I found on Google, and none had anything that close escept for Mouser, whom were as or more expensive than Rat Shack. I hate 'em too but at this point I just want this thing working. Unless anyone can point me to a plug with that exact spec elsewhere...

Will this one do? $12.95

TRANS, WALL, REG, SW, 5VDC/1.6A,
F2, 2.5X5.5mm, UL/CSA/CE
Jameco #: 216442
MFG:AKII POWER SPLY
MFG#:A05C1-05MP

Or this. $13.60

PWR SPLY,TBL,SW,5VDC/2.4A,F2,
2.1X5.5MM, UL/CSA/TUV/CE,W/CRD
Jameco #: 305154
MFG:MEANWELL
MFG#:G15A-1P2JU

Sombody more EE than me should confirm that more amps than you need is OK. It's not like having too many BTU's is it? Unless you short something out that shouldn't a been.

Hahah... wtf. I swear I just searched Jameco and looked down the list by category and didn't see that one. Your search fu is stronger than mine as they say. Thanks! It still comes out to $21, but I'd rather have the right one.

More amps is fine. The amps figure only tells you how many the the power supply can provide. It is the things that is plugged into it that determines how many amps are actually drawn.

<insert clever water-in-a-pipe analogy to volts and amps here>
