Frivolous item: "Nipper" favicon.ico for the empeg - 01/09/2005 13:08

Greetings!

I have always wanted to create a favicon.ico file and put it into my empeg for random listeners, but I never got around to it. Until this morning. If anyone wants it, attached is a favicon.ico file of Nipper, of RCA fame.

Eventually, when I get a bit of time in front of a graphic editor, I intend to swap my avatar again.

Speaking of Nipper, does anyone know of a link to a picture of the famous painting that Nipper is taken from? RCA used His Masters Voice showing Nipper listening to a Victrola but the complete picture shows that the Victrola and Nipper are on top of a coffin containing his master.

I know that it was done by Francis Barrand, but I cannot find / google a copy of the original painting. There is a little information about Nipper and the history behind the logo, but not much more.

That doesn't show anything that is obviously a coffin, though.

Very good! I did not see that one. Senility creeping in. I was searching by the artist name and "Nipper". Great site! Lots of good info. Although, the original work does not appear to have involved a coffin at all.

Edit: Gettin' slow, too...

I started at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nipper -- it's one of the links at the bottom.

As well as: The linked page has a bulleted list which cites the "Coffin" story as a false rumor.

I snopesed it immediately after the first post, since it sounded UL-y, but they haven't put up an article about it.

What is the favicon.ico? I see an error message on the serial port from time to time about it...

It's the little icon frequently seen in bookmark lists and browser tabs. Originally an IE thing, widely adopted. All modern browsers request a "/favicon.ico" file automatically. You can create a null file of that name to supress the error message. It's not a simple image file like a gif or png, but closer to the Windows icon file format containing the same image at multiple resolutions.

It's just a file requested by IE and other browsers. It lets browsers get icons for bookmarks/web pages.

So if you don't have one, you'll quite often see 404 not found errors in logs (and the empeg serial port where the http server logs to)

Very frustrating! I swear I saw a picture somewhere years ago (before the internet) that clearly showed the coffin and now all I can find are pictures where it looks like it might be a coffin with every other sight stating that it is a coffin, the other sites stating the coffin was a false rumour. One sight mentioned he painted over a dozen versions of the Nipper painting while others claim the original showed an Edison Cylinder unit that when Edison was not interested in his painting he painted over the Cylinder unit with a Gramaphone unit in order to sell it to the Gramaphone company.
