Online photo sharing service

Online photo sharing service - 18/12/2005 20:57

I'm trying to find an online photo sharing service with decent organisation features (i.e. more than one level of albums). Any tips or do I need to rent server space and run Gallery?

By the way, I want this as I thought it would be a good idea to put up the hundreds of empeg pics I've accumulated, many of which have probably never been seen before. Apart from the one of Hugo in a server rack of course.

pbase.com isn't bad if your willing to pay a few bucks.

If it's not going to be extremely high traffic, I can host gallery for you for free. Server is with Rackspace.

Does Flickr meet your requirements? I know a bunch of people (including people who could easily host their own Gallery server) who have opted for Flickr.

I agree with Tony - Flickr should meet your needs.

I signed up for Flickr but I don't see how to make hierarchical sets.. they seem to be flat.

That's very generous! I suspect traffic will be very low volume, as the galleries will be of somewhat limited empeg geek interest!

Additionally, if you're not interested in the hassle of setting up and maintaining Gallery (even when it works it's a pain sometimes), you can use Web Album Generator to make the client-side pages and just upload them as HTML. Since they're just HTML pates, hierarchy is as easy as putting things in subfolders with links. Not quite as simple as Gallery (once it's up and running), but at least it works the first time.

John set me up with Gallery and it's working great. It's going to take a few days to upload (and comment) everything, then there should be plenty of material for the quiz at the next meet

I realise this has now been answered, but I use fotki.com.

Hierachical, unlimited space (you do have to subscribe though), optionally offer the original unscaled files for download to viewers, password protected folders, etc. Even has plugins for XP photo sharing.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind should I over burden Jonathan's bandwidth at any time. The photos probably aren't that interesting though
