And yet another stride in genetics... Article

There's a good debate on this going on at Downsizer, a couple of the contributors are trained genetecists and one of them actually works in the industry:

BTW my favourite Seuss is Cat In The Hat, and anyone that reads to their kids at bedtime should own The Sleep Book, never fails.

But the ham isn't supposed to be green, just the eggs

I'm partial to Yertle the Turtle myself. I'm Yertle the Turtle, o marvelous me, for I am the ruler of all that I see.

Go Dog Go was really good too.

Okay, I'm officially sick and tired of the fluorescence trick with genetic manipulation. That gag has now jumped the shark. Or jumped the double-helix or whatever you want to call it. It's the genetic equivalent of ricing out your Honda civic. Anyone can do it just by bolting on parts from a catalog, and the result is rarely aesthetically pleasing.

In the article they talk about using the fluorescence to track where implanted stem cells from a green pig go when implanted in a normal pig. As such, it seems reasonable to me.

Okay, that is useful, assuming that actually works as described.

I'm just sick of seeing fluorescent fish, fluorescent rabbits, fluorescent animal-du-jour, just for the sake of saying "hey look we can manipulate genes, see our fluorescent ferret?".

Quote:
The basic principle is called a reporter gene system

When putting genetic material(transfecting) into another organism be it bacteria, yeast or a pig you need to beable to quickly tell if the transfection has been sucessful

The simplest system is called the lacz reporter gene. This is a gene which will digest certain compounds and produce a blue colour. If you attached the lacz gene to the other genetic material you want to transfect then grow the bacteria on this compound you know if you have been sucessful because your colonies are blue

These genetic material from these pigs could potentially be used in a very similar manner

This is a post at downsizer, the poster works with this kind of technology and is supportive of it, she says it'll definitely have benefits in animal testing.

The words are good, just don't like the pictures. What's the one that was published posthumously, about different coloured days, teriffic book.

Is it "The Sleep Book" or "Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book" ?

Thanks!

Absolutely! What we want to see are four assed ferrets, and four assed versions of all those other animals too.

Much better than a half-assed attempt...

A four assed baboon?

That's interesting & I'm sure quite useful. I'd like to see glow in the dark cocktail mixers and soda/juices.

There'd be nothing better at a Haloween coctail party.

You don't need genetics to do that.

Green eggs. I've eaten one. Tastier that it looks.

Great! I still haven't seen a glowing drink yet :P (Short of a submerged glow stick and that doesn't count!)

Non-toxic glowing drinks. I swear somebody will make a fortune with them.

Tonic water fluoresces in UV light.

Re: "I will not eat green eggs and ham." - 13/01/2006 20:08

Hmmm, I'll have to get a UV light and experiment to see if the quantity of gin and lime have any effect on its properties.

It would take an Englishman to know this type of thing.

Thinking of gin and tonics, does anybody know why they're called 'gin and tonic' while one orders 'vodka tonic' instead of 'vodka and tonic'? (really, not a teaser, I don't know)

Re: "I will not eat green eggs and ham." - 13/01/2006 20:18

I'd wager that it's because "vodka and" requires a glottal stop between the two words where as "gin and" does not. And linguistic acrobatics are not suggested while under the influence.

Mixing salt into the tonic water stops it fluorescing (don't do this with a gin and tonic -- it's a waste of gin), so I'm not sure if the lime juice might do the same. Try it -- it's a simple drunken science experiment, which are always fun.

Really, a well informed and civilized debate (like the whole site, after all).

Unfortunately John won't leave us alone. He's like a pit bull, just won't let go.
