Linux-friendly Gigabit NIC recommendation? - 19/05/2006 19:05

Any recommendations for a linux-friendly (and readily available) PCI gigabit NIC?

A few local shops have the following:

D-Link DGE-530T 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit PCI Network Adapter

SysKonnect SK 9521 V2.0 Gigabit Network Adapter 32 Bit 10/100/1000Base-T

Trendware - TEG-PCITXR - 10/100/1000Mbps Copper Gigabit PCI Adapter

Netgear - GA311 - 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit PCI Adapter

Intel Pro 1000/GT Desktop 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Network Adapter

Mach Speed - SK-9521 - 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Ethernet Adapter

Power Up 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Network Adapter

Gigafast - GE1000-AXP - 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Network Adapter

Sabrent 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Adapter

Linksys - EG1064 - 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Adapter (pricey at over $85)

Linksys - EG1032 - Instant Gigabit Network PCI Adapter

U.S. Robotics - USR997902 - 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Ethernet Adapter

Hiro - H50070 - 10/100/1000 32-bit Low Profile PCI Network Adapter

Zonet - ZEN3300E- 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI Network Adapter

(I left out some Intel and 3Com models that were over $150)

Thanks,
Bruno

I imagine that any that say "Broadcom" on the chip will work gangbusters. If you can actually see the card in the packaging, that is.

That's going to be a challenge... Anyone know if any of the above use a broadcom part?

Get the Intel part. Probably any of those listed will work, though, but I actually *have* some Intel GigE stuff here, so I know those are fine, and the driver is from Intel themselves.

Also supported in the current kernels: MyriCOM, NS-DP83820, PE Hamachi GNIC-II, DLink DL2000, Alteon AceNIC/3Com 3C985/NetGear GA620, PE Yellowfin, Realtek 8169, SIS190, SysKonnect SK-98xx/SK-95xx, Marvell Yukon (including a zillion relabelled versions from 3Com, Marvell, Belkin, etc..), etc..

See attached kernel config file for a more complete list, with a few more notes on which ones have Jumbo frames, do NAPI (fast polling for higher throughput), etc..

Pretty much everything seems to be supported.

Cheers

intel, that's about the only one I would get out of that list..

broadcom tg3 based also work well, but most of those on the list will be cheapo chipsets.
