Glossy tft screen on a laptop

Glossy tft screen on a laptop - 02/12/2006 22:34

I'm about to put an order in for a 15inch 2.33GHz Macbook Pro. I'm going to up the HD to 160GB which pushes the delivery date from 24 hours to 7-10 days. There's a note on the website that says if I order it with a glossy screen as well then it's back down to 24 hours.

My question is, having not had a glossy screen on a laptop before, is it worth having, if only to get the delivery back down to a short time and practically guarantee a pre xmas delivery?

I think the contrast is better with a glossy screen. The actual pixels should be roughly equivalent if they're using similar spec panels but there are some disadvantages to go with the higher contrast. The glossy surface is a dirt magnet, fingerprints will really show up and its nearly impossible to use the screen outside if its sunny.

Having a Macbook with a glossy screen my self I have never noticed any of these problems. I have used it on the train in the daylight etc... and it's fine. As for fingerprints it's as simple as not touching the screen

I think it's a personal choice, go down to the Trafford Centre and take a look your self before putting in the order.

Did you sort any discount?

Cheers

Hopefully, yes. Apple have a site on procureweb.ac.uk. Which is a higher/further education purchasing site on JAnet. As a result it's only available on a uni computer. So I went and visited an old mate and used his PC to have a look. It'll end up being approx 1500 including the HD upgrade and VAT compared to 1700 off the normal apple site.

Not bad, I got about 15% off this one using the educational discount over the corperate discount which was about 5%.

My laptop has the glossy screen, there are differences but none I'd use to disqualify it as a choice. As I'm remembering it, the mat finish tends over time to, well... crud over. It can be difficult to actually get the mat finish really clean.

Best easiest way to remove finger prints from a gloss screen is with a fresh piece of natural Chamois.

Well, it's on it's way.... So now to a bag. Where's the best place to get Crumpler bags cheap? I like the look of the Cheesy Disco.

Let me know if you find a place, I really don't think there's anywhere with great prices on them over here. I managed to get a good deal on my camera bag on ebay, but that's not an every day thing.

Before I Grew Up And Joined Corporate America and bought a tumi laptop briefcase, I always used my Waterfield laptop sleeve in my generic backpack. They come in top or side loading, so they're great for backpacks or messenger bags. They produce some high quality stuff, and they were also great to deal with when I emailed them with a question.

Crazy web site, Crumpler's that is. Pull chain and all.

I noticed how every bag has a photo showing it's liquid capacity in addition to its normal capacity.
