Job Opening, Seattle

Job Opening, Seattle - 28/03/2007 00:23

OK, this is a complete longshot, but I figured I should try to take advantage of the positive juju current that flows here. I mean, the Empeg BBS works in mysterious ways.

I just want to say that I am aware of a job opening in Seattle Washington for a mostly systems administrator. I say "mostly" because it will undoubtably also involve more mundane work like helping people figure out how to fit their coffee cup in the weird cup holder on their PC. So, it will not suffice to be a Linux/iptables/perl god or goddess. You'll need to work happily and effectively with many people who aren't aware that those three things exist.

The upside? No risky, unreliable stock options. No anxieties about what you'll have to do if you get rich and have to retire early.

I can also say with some confidence that the customary requirement to call certain persons "Mister Hogan'. "Your Highness", or "Your Excellency" will be waived. And no commuting to Redmond

Please contact me for the relevant URL.

Is there any commuting to Seattle? Cause I'm all over this, except for that pesky 43 hour drive.

Bitt,

It doesn't have to be 43 hours. If you peg your departure at around 3AM and make a bit more northing into Wisconsin, you can kick ass across Wisconsin, Minnesota, Dakotas and Montana. Hell, I've done Boston to Seattle in 37.

This is why they invented the Empeg.

Even so, it doesn't leave a lot of "me" time.

Don't forget, coffee on every corner. If you throw a keyboard, you'll likely hit a coffee shop.

37 hours, that's impressive. Must have been summer. It took be 36 hours driving from Fargo, ND to Seattle. 18 inches of snow slowed down my 24 foot Ryder truck with a car in tow. You can actually drive those things sideways if you hit a big enough drift. Eh, em, not that I would know...

Really?

If it helps, I have the entire Aubrey/Maturin series (unabridged) in MP3 format. I'd be happy to loan them. Makes the commute fly by. (Please don't tell me you don't like Books on Empeg!)

Oh, and did I say that it is rarely hot and humid here?

Jim, expect a PM. Maybe I can get you and MarkM's company into a bidding war over me.

I love PMs.

Now from a market-value standpoint, I think it would be inadvisable to let MarkM know that he is bidding against the State of Washington.

OK? But that is completely hush-hush. Just between you and me

Cool, now we can hire Tony for $25k less that what we were thinking. Of course you'd be working on government holidays, but you do get time off between Xmas and New Years. Don't forget that snazzy Blackberry so you can work nearly non-stop and avoid uncomfortable social interactions. Don't feel like talking to the person in the elevator - no problem - pull out the Blackberry and look busy.

ROFL

In all seriousness, though, I'm not some fly by night guy who just goes wherever the money is. I'm actually a very loyal employee (I was at Kelly for more than 12 years before they shut down the department), and I tend to stay with whoever I'm with. But there's a certain level of modest budget I like to live at, and I'm currently under-running that budget with my temp-hourly position in the moleman army. Find me a pay scale that keeps my nostrils above the waterline, and I'm happy.

Ah, then you would like the free weekly staff swimming practice in Drumheller Fountain.

Just giving you a hard time. I know that you're a good guy and not anxious for a change.

You should touch base with me. I think you'd need to modify your resume for the testing position we have open - if you're interested. The server ops position required a bit more of something - but I have no idea what ?? after reviewing your resume again today. I'm also not seeing the other resumes coming in since I'm not the hiring manager for these two positions. It might not hurt to add some detail to the resume after looking at it with a more critical eye. I can offer some suggestions.
