Windows 7 / IE8 login problem on empegbbs.com (cookies?)

Windows 7 / IE8 login problem on empegbbs.com (cookies?) - 14/09/2010 20:36

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate machine at home. When I log in to the empeg forum, it initially says "Welcome Shonky" in the top right and the unread posts are displayed.

As soon as I open a post, it goes back to "Not logged in" or words to that effect. Posts that are read are not marked as read. Also it's effectively impossible to post since I can't really log in. As soon as I go to a secondary page I'm logged out or IE8 forgets I'm logged in.

I have IE8 on two WinXP machines and there's no problem with them. So I'd guess some thing with cookies and the Win7 / IE8 combination.

Other cookies seem to work just fine. e.g. facebook and other forums (although I don't frequent any running UBBthreads I don't think)

Any ideas?

On Windows 7 64 + IE8 I experienced exactly the same for two days last week. Now it all works fine and I did not change anything in my cfg. Try to logoff-logon form the empegbbs.

Windows 7 64 here too although I don't expect that would make a difference.

I think it did work once or twice but over the 6 months or so I have had it, it's hardly worked at all.

I've tried to logout, cleared cookies/cache/history, rebooted a number of times and no go. Now, all that said I went and cleared the history unchecking the "preserve data" option and it seems to be working (posting now from the machine). See how long it lasts before it happens again.

I am experiencing this again.
If checkbox to keep me logged in is "ON", I get logged off after I enter any forum from the homepage.
If the chekbox is off all is ok, except that, of course, I need to logon every time I come back to the boards.

Clearly a ploy to get me to use this blasted and foreign browser.

(Win 7 64 bit, IE 8 32 bit)

Logged in and remember me is set. Nothing strange so far. I'll check over the next few days to see what happens.

Is your browser switching back and forth between Protected Mode On and Off by chance? If so cookies go away when it switches.

No, it's not. And, it's been working fine for months on these same boards (I have Win7 64b since beta, and I have IE8 since its release, and use it daily).

It is something new, and inconsistent, and only here (so far). No other issue in heavy daily browsing with different machines (same OS/Browser) and from different locations.

Drakino, as far as I am concerned, no rush at all. Having to logon every time is not at all a big deal.

Thats what puzzles me. These boards are running the same software release they have since last November. And I checked the admin logs, nothing major has changed config wise since the move to the new server in May. At most, theres been a few tweaks to the style, and an edit of the links at the top.

Well, it also seems to happen only with Win7/IE8, so it really looks like a specific combinatio of boards/browser/OSs... I have to PCs on my desk at work, and the other one is a WindowsXP+IE8, and I don't think I am experiencing the same problem there. I'll confirm that tomorrow anyway.

This isn't a solution, but if you use Lastpass (which I believe works in IE8, and pretty much every browser), you can set it up to auto-login for you.

Thanks Matt. Again, not a big deal having to logon every time, but I'll give a look at it.

Also, it does not seem to be session-related. Tom, how long are sessions on the server end? I often leave the empegbbs page open in my IE for hours and when I'm back I have no issue: I am and stay logged on; it just happened, for example: I am assuming that after 5 hrs, for example, session has expired and I should have been prompted to logon.
All is well now, instead.

... I confirm that WinXP+IE8 seems to have no issue with cookies.

Just opened up IE, headed to empegBBS, read some messages in various forums. No issues yet. Cookies should be valid for 356 days. (No idea why it's not 365).

Tonight, no issues at all: rebooted, started IE8, came to the boards and I am already logged in, which is weird because last time I did login I had NOT checked the box.

No idea.

Well it was working when I last used it at home (travelling in India now). I feel it will return though at some point.
