Android: best way to fully synch with Exchange - 23/09/2011 10:25

What would you recommend to have Android synch with Exchange (2007), mainly to include mail and calendar, but possibly for all the rest? Even non-free apps would be welcome.

Thank you!

I think I'm a tad confused. In my experience you don't need to download any apps to get Android to connect to an Exchange server. Once the account is added, it just brings everything into the respective included apps.

Then again, I've only done this on a few phones, but each time I'm pretty sure we didn't need to do anything else to get email, calendar, and contacts into the phone (I'm not sure what else you'd need, either).

What are you experiencing when you try to connect?

Also, Android version is 2.3.3, on a Galaxy S II .

Matt, the default mail app is giving us problems, meaning that email is synched correctly, but calendar items are not being replicated to the terminal. Also, I am reading confusing information on line: it seems that besides having this limitation, it does not allow you to respond to appointment invitations.
So, I was wondering what to do to allow full Exchange synch. Or, at least, mail AND calendar.

... Matt, sorry, I only now realize you said that you also successfully synchronized calendar with the default app? If so, is there anything in particular that needs to be done? Basically, all we're doing is entering account info: server, domain, user name, password, and of course this is after selecting the "exchange" account, so basically the system knows that the mail server is exchange. What are we missing?

Thank you!

I will throw the standard "fractured" Android warning in here in regards to Exchange. My Samsung Captivate from last summer had code to support Exchange that was added in by Samsung. It wasn't stock open Android, nor Google closed Android code.

To be honest, this may be the case, though I was setting it up on an HTC phone. I don't know if they also have added Exchange functionality that doesn't work on regular Android.

Could you remind me what phone you're using?

Unfortunately I'm not an expert on Exchange (or Android), so I'm not sure what I can say.

Well, I can say something: I hope things get better with Ice Cream Sandwich.

The UI is *terrible*, and it seemed to suck up more battery than I was willing to accept, but it did seem to sync everything properly in the brief time I used the trial. If you *must* have proper sync, it's probably as good as it gets right now.

Fortunately, the K-9 email developers are working on Excahnge activesync support. Given how solid K-9 is as a client, I'd keep an eye on that.

Thanks Tony. Useful info. Yes, I need Exchange sync to include mail and calendar for some users at work. I was hoping I'd be less time consuming. I'll keep an eye on K-9.

Yeah, Nitrodesk is hideous. I installed that for a client who was having issues with the contacts display on her Thunderbolt, but the Nitrodesk UI was even worse.

Every phone provider seems to do Exchange ActiveSync differently I suspect this is because ActiveSync has to be licensed and Google didn't want to pay the license for the OS so each provider has to pay it and implement it independently. Apple did pay Microsoft for the ActiveSync license.
