MBP glass replacement

MBP glass replacement - 06/02/2012 23:06

My 16-month old decided to drop my closed MBP on a tile floor. I opened it to find it fully functional but the glass on the screen is broken (spiderwebbed).

I've seen several online sites that offer to replace the glass, some of them for what I consider a reasonable price. Anyone have any experience with any of these repair sites? Would you recommend it to others?

From everything I've heard, your best bet is to go with iFixit.com. They sell you the parts, all necessary tools, and instructions. It sounds like with their products even someone like me could handle a repair like yours smile

I saw a repair walk-through somewhere online, but got cold feet when it talked about using a heat gun to melt the adhesive that holds the glass to the LCD without melting the rubber gasket around the edge. I think I'd rather just send it to a service and get it repaired with a 1-yr warranty.

EDIT: Looks like iFixit does sell the glass and have a guide to replace it.

These guys do the repair for $129 (plus shipping). That's only $30 more than the cost of the glass from iFixit. Anyone ever used them?

In This forum thread mention is made of an apple repair shop in cancun.

Hi all,

There is an licensed Apple Service Centre in Cancun. I had my 2 year-old MacBook Pro repaired under warranty in 2009. They do speak english and were extremely helpful...

That's the way I would want to go, but... beware the pitfalls of shipping it in and out of the country.

I don't know what the policy is in Belize, but in Mexico I would end up paying very hefty import duty (50% of the assessed value of the computer) when it came back from the repair shop.

Thankfully, my Mother-in-law is coming for the birth of my third in a couple months. I'll probably send it home with her and have her send it back through someone else that's coming down. If it looks like someone's personal laptop and is clearly used, customs won't ask any questions.

But you're correct. In addition to massive customs charges, shipping is obscenely expensive here.

Bummer, I was there two weeks ago on holiday with my parents. Would have been nice to check it out. We'll likely go back in August since it's so stinkin' cheap to go from here ($39 bus ticket). Of course I'll have to find someone to translate...

Ahora yo tengo algo de español y se podría traducir para usted si usted pagaría mi boleto de avión, habitación de hotel y comidas. smile

Dude, make him pay for it. Didn't he even offer to pay for it? What a dick move.

Yeah, them punk kids - no sense of responsibility.

PS. Just learned a new trick entering text on the iPad. Wanted to go back and insert the comma. I've always had trouble placing the insertion point. Lifting my fat finger tends to shift the curser one place either way. The trick, just keep the cursor pinned in place, and tap the comma key.

BRILLIANT. Intend to try that on my iPhone next time I need it.

I'll make sure to deduct it from her wedding budget. I'm up several hundred dollars so far and I've got a lot of years to go <evil grin>.
