ATSC tuner with HDMI output?

ATSC tuner with HDMI output? - 16/07/2014 01:58

Hi, I've got a q...

I have an older Vizio (worst support ever!) HDTV that, because of a firmware bug, crashes when it tries to scan antenna signals. Vizio never releases firmware updates, so this is now a monitor.

So, I want a simple atsc tuner with hdmi output so I can continue to use this tv.

Anyone know of such a thing? I'm not having much luck beyond older PVRs that output SD only on the hdmi port...

Thanks!

Perhaps a SimpleTV + Roku?

You end up with a networked DVR for good measure albeit at a significant price premium.

Also:

Amazon search for ATSC Tuner

Is something like this what you're looking for?

Pretty much we only watch antenna and sometimes Netflix, but I have the tv connected to the 'puter for that.

It seems any (most) of the PVR boxes will do this. I ignored them because I don't see us ever using the recording function. I suppose I'll get that.

Thanks!

You really just need a digital "converter" box, with HD HDMI output.

That's what I thought of when I heard the problem. If this were late '08/early '09 you might have been able to get one of these for free.

Naw, the "free" ones were required to be crippled: no HD output. Or at least that's how I remember it. smile

The only converter boxes I've found with hdmi output only output sd on that hdmi output.

Strange! Well, it looks like the one I linked there does 1080p, so you should get some decent HD. Hopefully it doesn't mess with that wonderful OTA signal too much.

I'd still think about trying one of those PVR platforms, since some of them are fairly reasonable. From what I've heard, the UIs need some work, but they seem usable.
