Killed my wife's iPhone

Killed my wife's iPhone - 20/10/2017 06:12

Started an upgrade on it last night, left it overnight, it now has a passcode. She's never had a passcode!

All I can see on the Apple site says I should restore the phone, unfortunately wife doesn't do backups...

Any ideas on how I can remove the passcode?

Sorted, she did have one years ago, that's what it set itself to.

Perhaps the no passcode policy should be reviewed. Touch ID works well and is quite quick.

I think all the non touch ID iPhone models have been deprecated by the 32 bit hardware end-of-iOS update cycle.

Apple's already phasing touch ID out... and I'm not a fan of its replacement...

The newest iPhone 8 models currently for sale include Touch ID. It will be supported on current hardware for years to come.

‘New sources’ offering supposition regarding iPhone models to be released a year in the future would seem unlikely to have actual knowledge of Touch ID’s future inclusion or exclusion.

I had a lot of people ask me why I got an iPhone 8 instead of waiting for the X.

In the month I've owned my iPhone, there's been about two dozen times where the phone is about a foot to the right of me and I wanted to check something, so I just pushed the home button with my finger.

Well, the OS upgrade was in advance of her upgrade to an 8. Neither of us have passcodes as the kids always end up messing around on ours when they've run out of battery/4g etc.

I was messing around with my brother's 8 earlier and it seems to disable browsing while you're on the phone, I'm sure you can browse and talk simultaneously on my 6...

It's probably Verizon. They disable data when you're on a call. Bozos.

I thought it was a symptom of CDMA networks.

It is. But Verizon and Sprint users should be able to do simultaneous voice and data while on LTE. I haven't lived in the US in a while (or UK for that matter), but I imagine that should be becoming increasingly prevalent these days.

You’ve turned on iCloud backup for her now, right ?

It's a limitation of Verizon's (and Sprint's) take on CDMA. Not that Verizon's data ever worked well anyway... My phone was lte for data, and they still turned it off during a call.

She has a 64gb phone with about 7 million photos on it, almost full.

I need to back it up for her regularly

200GB of iCloud storage is $36/year.

100GB of Google Drive storage is $20/year.

I like Google Photos for any smartphone user. It makes storage management a breeze by deleting all backed-up photos from the phone, but in the Google Photos app there's no visible difference between the photos in the cloud and on the phone (as long as you have a signal).

How is that a ‘but’?

This seems similar to how Apple manages photos when iCloud is allowed to manage the on-device photo storage.

Ok sorry! I haven't used it myself, so I'm more familiar with how Google Photos handles things.

From what I've seen of iCloud Photos I just like Google Photos more anyway. The Assistant is pretty fantastic. It's also really easy to create albums to share with other people, and others can collaborate on albums. It's also cross-platform so my wife and I were both able to use it when I was on an Android phone.

Remember, I'm an iPhone user now but it's going to take quite a lot to get me to switch to Apple services!

Another issue for us is our appalling broadband, lucky to get 2.6mbps d/l so wife hasn't got much bandwidth to be running icloud backups with.

iPhone / Settings / Cellular data / iCloud Drive / off

Limits iCloud Drive to wi-fi.

Re: Killed my wife's iPhone - 25/10/2017 07:31

That isn't going to help. It is his broadband and hence his wifi that is only running at 2.6mb, not his cellular service.

Also, I don't think there is an option there to turn off cellular usage for iCloud.

Further, iCloud drive isn't what is used for iCloud backup.

And finally, iCloud backup only runs over wifi anyway, it won't backup when it is only on cellular.

Can you schedule iTunes backups over wifi?

Re: Killed my wife's iPhone - 25/10/2017 16:20

Sadly not. iTunes backups only happen over USB.

That's a bummer. I will try and be more diligent in backing her phone up.
