Gmail on iPhone looking for pass code

My iPhone won't let me into the GMail app, it's saying I need to set a pass code. I don't have a pass code set on my phone, is there a way to get around this?

If you set a (temporary) passcode on the iPhone does gmail app then start working?

Maybe it is time to upgrade to an iPhone with Touch ID or Face ID, so you can have a proper passcode and not be inconvenienced?
